Intel Layoffs: Reportedly Over 21,000 Employees Affected

Intel Announces Significant Workforce Reduction
Intel is preparing to reduce its workforce by approximately 21,000 employees, representing around 20% of its total personnel. This announcement is anticipated to be made within the current week, as reported by Bloomberg.
Leadership Transition and Financial Context
This development precedes Intel’s first-quarter earnings report, which will be led by Lip-Bu Tan, the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer. Tan succeeded Pat Gelsinger in this role last year.
The planned layoffs are intended to facilitate a restructuring of management and a renewed focus on engineering principles, according to sources at Bloomberg.
Previous Restructuring Efforts
At the close of the previous year, Intel employed approximately 108,900 individuals. This figure already reflects a prior reduction of 15,000 positions announced in August 2024.
Challenges and Strategic Shifts
Intel has faced considerable challenges in recent years. Over the last five years, the company’s stock value has decreased by roughly 67%.
Since taking the position of CEO late in 2024, Lip-Bu Tan has initiated a strategy of separating certain Intel divisions into “noncore” business units.
Recently, Intel completed the sale of a 51% stake in its Altera semiconductor business to the private equity firm Silver Lake.
Company Response
A request for comment directed to Intel has not yet received a response.
The company is actively working to streamline operations and refocus its resources on core engineering competencies.
