Intel Return to Office: Mandates Four Days In-Office

Intel Mandates Four-Day Work Week in Office

Intel has announced a new policy requiring employees to work from the office four days each week. This represents a change from the company’s existing arrangements.

Announcement During Earnings Call

The decision was communicated by CEO Lip-Bu Tan during Intel’s Q1 2025 earnings call, which took place on Thursday. Previously, employees were permitted to work remotely for two days a week.

Tan noted that compliance with the existing hybrid work policy has been inconsistent. He stated adherence has been “uneven at best.”

Rationale Behind the Shift

“I strongly believe that our facilities must serve as dynamic centers for teamwork, embodying our company culture,” Tan explained. In-person interaction is believed to enhance discussion and debate.

Spending time together physically is expected to lead to more effective and quicker decision-making processes. Furthermore, it is anticipated to reinforce relationships among colleagues.

Implementation Details

The new policy will be implemented starting September 1. Local management will be responsible for providing specific details relevant to each location.

Input from staff will be sought to optimize the on-site work environment and ensure a positive experience.

Industry Trend

Intel joins a growing number of large technology companies requiring employees to return to the office. The company is also reportedly considering workforce reductions of up to 20%.

In 2024, Amazon gained attention when CEO Andy Jassy announced a five-day in-office requirement for corporate staff. Salesforce introduced a four-day in-office policy in October of the same year.

Apple transitioned to a hybrid model back in 2022.

Productivity and Satisfaction

The impact of return-to-office mandates on productivity remains a subject of debate. However, research indicates that such policies can negatively affect employee satisfaction.

While productivity gains are not definitively proven, a decrease in morale has been observed.
