Intel Scales Back CES 2022 Physical Presence

In response to increasing anxieties surrounding the omicron variant, Intel has announced a reduction in its physical participation at CES 2022. This decision follows similar announcements from Lenovo and Waymo regarding their withdrawal from the in-person event.

Prioritizing Health and Safety

The semiconductor manufacturer emphasized that the well-being of its employees, partners, and customers remains paramount. A statement released to TechCrunch indicated a shift towards a predominantly digital experience.

“After careful consideration and consultation with health experts, and aligned with Intel’s safety protocols, our CES strategy will prioritize a digital-first, live presentation,” the company stated. “On-site staffing will be minimized to facilitate this approach.”

Growing List of Cancellations

Intel is now among a substantial and expanding roster of companies altering their CES plans. Other notable names include T-Mobile, AT&T, Meta, Twitter, Amazon, TikTok, and Pinterest.

The Consumer Technology Association (CTA), the organization governing CES, maintains that the event will proceed as planned. They cite robust health protocols and a comparatively limited number of cancellations to date.

CTA’s Stance on Event Continuity

According to a recent statement provided to TechCrunch, the CTA believes CES can still deliver value. They point to mandatory vaccinations, mask requirements, and readily available COVID-19 testing as key safety measures.

“Considering CES’ comprehensive health protocols – including vaccination mandates, mask usage, and COVID-19 test availability – alongside reduced attendance and implemented social distancing, we are optimistic that attendees and exhibitors will experience a safe, productive, and valuable event in Las Vegas, complemented by our digital access platform,” the organization explained.

Impact on Startups

Concerns about the omicron variant are also influencing the plans of numerous startups. A growing number of these emerging companies are opting to minimize or eliminate their physical presence at CES 2022.

These adjustments reflect a broader trend of prioritizing safety and adapting to the evolving circumstances of the pandemic.
