Instagram Reintroduces Chronological Feed Options

Instagram is now fulfilling its earlier commitment to reinstate a chronological feed for its users.

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, announced via Twitter on Wednesday that the platform is implementing significant alterations to the core feed experience.

These changes will allow users to select from three distinct feed views. The new "Favorites" and "Following" options will organize content in chronological order.

New Feed Options Explained

A third option, labeled “Home,” will continue to present the currently utilized algorithmically sorted feed.

Mosseri explained that the “Home” feed will increasingly feature recommendations, evolving into a discovery platform rather than a space for staying current with followed accounts.

The “Favorites” feed will enable users to easily track updates from a select group of friends and family.

Content from all followed accounts will still be accessible within the “Following” view.

These updates are currently being deployed or will be over the coming weeks, with a finalized version planned for release in the first half of 2022.

A Shift from Algorithmic Feeds

For years, Instagram provided a chronological feed before transitioning to an algorithmic system in 2016.

This shift followed indications from its parent company, Facebook (now Meta), that the app would become a primary source of advertising revenue.

The algorithmic feed allowed Instagram to more effectively integrate advertisements throughout the user experience.

This moved the platform away from its original function as a simple, chronological photo-sharing service.

Motivations Behind the Change

Instagram’s decision to reintroduce chronological feeds isn’t solely driven by user satisfaction.

Had user happiness been the sole motivator, the changes would have been implemented immediately following the 2016 backlash.

The return of chronological feeds represents a win for Instagram users, but also illustrates Meta’s tendency to adopt user-centric improvements only when facing external pressure.

This pressure can stem from negative publicity or the threat of regulatory action.

Regulatory Scrutiny and Algorithm Transparency

U.S. lawmakers are increasingly focused on the potential harms of social media algorithms.

Several legislative proposals aim to grant users greater control and transparency regarding algorithmic content ranking.

Proposed Legislation

  • The Protecting Americans from Dangerous Algorithms Act could suspend Section 230 protections for platforms like Instagram if their algorithms amplify misinformation linked to real-world violence.
  • The Filter Bubble Transparency Act would mandate platforms to offer a toggle allowing users to disable algorithmic recommendations.

Mosseri stated during his recent Congressional testimony, “We believe in more transparency and accountability and we believe in more control.”

He further added, “That’s why we’re currently working on a version of a chronological feed that we hope to launch next year.”
