Instagram Reels Now Support 60-Second Videos
Recent announcements from Instagram indicate a shift in the platform’s focus. It is evolving beyond its origins as a simple photo-sharing application.
Expanded Video Length and Accessibility Features
Users can now upload videos up to 60 seconds in length to Reels, Instagram’s direct competitor to TikTok. This update introduces a new captions sticker for Reels.
The captions sticker automatically transcribes audio into text. This functionality was initially tested in Instagram Stories. It enhances accessibility for users who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Furthermore, it caters to individuals who prefer to consume content without audio. Currently, the captions sticker is limited to select English-speaking regions.
Instagram intends to broaden its availability to encompass additional countries and languages in the near future. TikTok already provides a comparable feature to its users.
Implications for Content Creators
Previously, Reels were restricted to a maximum duration of 30 seconds. TikTok, conversely, allows videos of up to three minutes. The extended 60-second limit on Reels is particularly advantageous for creators.
It enables them to repurpose existing content from TikTok and other platforms. This facilitates growth across multiple social media channels. A growing number of individuals are earning income through social media.
With numerous platforms vying for attention – including Pinterest’s investment in short-form video – cross-posting content is a strategic approach. This new feature benefits creators with established TikTok followings.
It also serves Instagram’s interests by increasing engagement with Reels. Instagram’s algorithm does not favor content bearing a TikTok watermark.
However, resourceful users have discovered methods to share videos without the watermark.
Competition in the Short-Form Video Landscape
YouTube Shorts and Snapchat’s Spotlight also currently support videos up to 60 seconds in length. YouTube Shorts launched a $100 million creator fund in May.
This fund aims to distribute funds to top Shorts creators throughout 2021 and 2022. Snapchat previously allocated $1 million daily to popular Spotlight creators.
The distribution period spanned from its launch in late November 2020 to the end of that year. Both Facebook and Instagram have pledged to invest in digital creators.
Accessing the New Feature
To utilize the 60-second Reel capability, begin creating a new Reel. Then, press the downward-facing arrow on the screen’s left side to access the menu.
Select “length” to choose between 15-second, 30-second, or 60-second Reel options. While not yet universally available, the 60-second option is expected to become accessible to all users shortly.
