Instagram Remix Feature: Now Available for All Public Videos

Instagram Expands Remix Feature to All Public Videos
Instagram has announced a significant update today, extending the functionality of its Remix feature to encompass all public video content on the platform. Initially launched last March, Remix was previously limited to short-form Reels videos.
What is Remix?
The Remix tool enables users to create a video alongside an existing public video from another user. This facilitates interaction, reaction, collaboration, and the showcasing of content within the Instagram Reels ecosystem.
Now, Instagram confirms that any publicly posted video will be eligible for remixing. However, this change applies only to videos published publicly following this update; older content remains unaffected.
Driven by User Engagement
The company stated that this expansion is a direct response to the positive reception of Remix among Reels users. Instagram aims to provide creators with increased opportunities to creatively reinterpret their content and engage in collaborative projects.
When remixing videos that aren't Reels, creators will retain access to the full suite of Reels creative tools, including Collabs, Voiceover, Effects, and Audio Tools.
How to Remix a Video
To utilize the new feature, users should tap the three-dot menu located in the upper-right corner of any public Instagram video published after the update. Selecting “Remix this video” will allow recording a response or uploading a video from the device’s camera roll.
Creators have the flexibility to remix either the entirety or a specific segment of the original video, and the resulting remix can be downloaded and shared across all platforms where Reels are visible.
Controlling Remix Permissions
While the expanded feature is expected to encourage more remixing and content creation, Instagram acknowledges that not all creators will welcome the repurposing of their videos.
Users can opt out of allowing remixes of their videos through their account settings, specifically under the “Reels and Remix Controls” section. This setting allows toggling remixes on or off for both Reels and feed videos.
By default, all users will be enrolled in the new feature, but individual video remix permissions can also be managed on a per-video basis.
Implications for Content Creators
Instagram’s decision to broaden Remix functionality appears to operate under the assumption that all users with public accounts identify as “creators” and are receptive to having their content reused by others.
However, many Instagram users may have inadvertently set their accounts to public during initial setup, without fully understanding the potential implications for content exposure.
This approach mirrors similar strategies employed by other platforms, such as YouTube, which automatically allowed audio sampling from other videos when launching YouTube Shorts to compete with TikTok. Instagram has now extended this concept further.
Additional Updates: Live Scheduling
In addition to the Remix changes, Instagram announced the ability for users to highlight the topic, date, and time of scheduled Live broadcasts on their profiles.
This enhancement provides a more convenient way for users to discover and register for upcoming Lives, reducing the need for creators to create separate feed posts for promotion.
These new features are currently being rolled out to all Instagram users.
