Instagram Desktop Posting: New Feature Coming Soon?

Instagram to Enable Desktop Posting After Years of Mobile Focus

For a considerable period, Instagram has concentrated its development efforts exclusively on its mobile application. However, the platform is now initiating tests to allow users to create posts directly from their computers.

Several users on Twitter observed the rollout of this testing phase on Thursday, and Instagram subsequently verified the test to TechCrunch.

Addressing a Growing Trend

An Instagram representative stated, “Recognizing that a significant number of individuals utilize Instagram on their computers, we are currently evaluating a feature that enables the creation of Feed posts through a desktop browser to enhance this experience.”

The impetus for this change stems from a noticeable increase in desktop usage during the pandemic. More users began accessing Instagram via computers instead of solely relying on their mobile devices.

How to Check for Access

To determine if the test is available to you, navigate to Instagram within your web browser. Look for a new “plus” icon located in the upper right corner of the icon tray.

It’s important to note that this test is not universally available and currently only supports the creation of posts for the main Instagram feed.

Expanding Desktop Functionality

This new feature represents the latest development in Instagram’s ongoing efforts to improve its desktop product. The platform previously introduced the ability to view Stories on the web in 2017.

Furthermore, direct messaging functionality was added to the desktop version late last year.

No Negative Impact on Mobile Engagement

According to an Instagram data scientist, the introduction of web messaging revealed no evidence of diminished engagement within the native mobile applications.

In fact, the data suggests the opposite: users who engage with both the web and mobile interfaces demonstrate increased time spent on each platform, compared to those who use only one.

This indicates that expanding access to desktop functionality can complement, rather than detract from, the mobile experience.
