Instagram Live Rooms: Broadcast with Up to Four Creators

Instagram Introduces "Live Rooms" for Collaborative Live Broadcasts
Instagram has recently unveiled a highly anticipated feature called “Live Rooms.” This new functionality enables up to four individuals to simultaneously broadcast live content. Previously, Instagram Live limited broadcasts to just two participants, mirroring the functionality of Facebook Live.
Expanding Creative Possibilities
The company anticipates that Live Rooms will foster greater creativity in live broadcasting. This includes formats such as live talk shows, expanded question and answer sessions, musical jam sessions, and interactive live shopping experiences.
Monetization Opportunities for Creators
Alongside the expanded broadcasting capabilities, Instagram highlights the potential for creators to increase their earnings. During the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, Instagram introduced badges as a means for fans to financially support their preferred creators during live videos.
These badges, visible next to a fan’s name throughout the broadcast, provide recognition in the comments and unlock exclusive features. These include placement on the creator’s list of badge holders and access to a unique heart icon.
Badge Pricing and Additional Features
Badges became widely accessible last autumn, offered at three different price points: $0.99, $1.99, and $4.99.
With Live Rooms, viewers can now purchase badges to support the hosts, alongside utilizing other interactive tools like Shopping and Live Fundraisers. Instagram is also actively developing additional features, including enhanced moderator controls and improved audio options, slated for release in the coming months.
Starting a Live Room
Initiating a Live Room is straightforward. Users simply swipe left and select the Live camera option. They then title the Room and tap the Room icon to invite guests.
A list of individuals who have already requested to join, as well as a search function for adding other guests, will be displayed.
Guest Management and Engagement
When a Live Room begins, the initiator remains prominently displayed at the top of the screen. Guests can be added either individually or all at once, allowing for the inclusion of “surprise guests” to maintain audience engagement.
Adding multiple guests can also contribute to a creator’s follower growth, as notifications are sent to all guests’ followers, in addition to the host’s.
Safety and Moderation
For safety purposes, individuals blocked by any participant in the Live Room will be unable to join the broadcast. Furthermore, users who have previously had their live access revoked due to violations of Instagram’s Community Guidelines will also be restricted from joining any Live Rooms.
Hosts retain the ability to report and block comments, and utilize comment filters, to ensure a secure and positive experience for all viewers during live broadcasts.
The Rise of Live Broadcasting
Live broadcasts have become increasingly vital for creators, businesses, and brands to maintain connections with their audiences, particularly during the pandemic. This period saw the cancellation of in-person events, including concerts, shows, classes, conferences, and meetups.
Instagram reported a substantial 70% increase in Live views between February and March, as creators and businesses transitioned their activities online.
Competition in the Live Social Space
As the pandemic continued into 2020 and 2021, the need for virtual connection spurred the growth of new social networks. Live audio platform Clubhouse, for example, experienced rapid adoption, particularly among tech and creative professionals.
Twitter and Facebook are also developing competing platforms.
In the broader live video broadcasting landscape, Instagram faces competition from platforms like Twitch, live shopping applications, YouTube, and TikTok. TikTok recently introduced a four-up livestream format.
Rollout Details
Instagram confirms that Live Rooms are currently being rolled out to both iOS and Android devices in all global markets. The company anticipates full availability to its entire user base within the week.
