Instagram Reels Gets TikTok-Like Voice Effects & Text-to-Speech

Instagram Introduces New Features for Reels
Yesterday, Instagram implemented two new functionalities within Reels: text-to-speech and voice effects. These additions, already widely utilized on TikTok, now expand the creative toolkit available to Instagram creators.
This development signifies Instagram’s continued pursuit of parity with TikTok in the realm of short-form video content. Instagram is actively working to attract and retain creators, demonstrated by the offering of substantial reels bonuses.
Text-to-Speech Functionality
The text-to-speech feature provides a crucial accessibility benefit, enabling individuals with visual impairments to comprehend on-screen text. Interestingly, videos employing these synthesized voices gained unexpected popularity on TikTok.
This surge in popularity led to legal action by the voice actor whose recordings were utilized, as her consent for this application had not been obtained. Following the lawsuit, TikTok subsequently altered the voice associated with the feature.
While offering accessibility advantages, creators frequently employ text-to-speech for comedic effect, utilizing the monotone, computerized narration to enhance their content.
The tool is accessible within the Reels camera’s text function. After recording or uploading a video, proceed to the preview stage to incorporate text. A text bubble will then appear at the screen's base, allowing users to control the timing of text display.
A three-dot icon within each text bubble opens a menu, providing the option to add a text-to-speech voiceover. Currently, two distinct voice options are available.
Voice Effects for Enhanced Creativity
Voice effects provide further opportunities for creative expression within Reels. These tools allow for the modification of both the audio and any accompanying voiceovers.
To access these effects, tap the music note icon after recording your Reel, which will open the audio mixer. An effects menu will then become visible, enabling adjustments to the audio or voiceover elements.
These new features are currently being deployed to Instagram mobile users.
