Instagram Enhances Live Creator Tools with Scheduling and Practice Mode

Instagram has announced the release of several new features designed to better support creators who utilize the platform’s Live functionality. These updates aim to streamline the live broadcasting process and improve audience engagement.

Live Scheduling Now Available

Creators can now schedule Instagram Live broadcasts up to 90 days in advance. This allows for proactive promotion of upcoming events and builds anticipation among followers. The scheduled Live events can be shared across Instagram, including Stories and Feed posts, to maximize reach.

Followers are also provided with the ability to set reminders for scheduled Lives, ensuring they don’t miss out on broadcasts from their preferred creators.

Introducing “Practice Mode” for Seamless Broadcasts

Responding to creator feedback, Instagram is introducing a “Practice Mode” feature. This allows creators to connect with their guests prior to the scheduled Live event.

During Practice Mode, creators can test their internet connection, adjust lighting, and address any other technical preparations needed for a smooth broadcast. This feature has been a frequently requested addition by the creator community.

Aligning with Competitors

The introduction of Live scheduling brings Instagram in line with other leading live streaming platforms. YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram’s parent company, Facebook, have all offered similar scheduling capabilities for some time.

  • YouTube has long provided tools for scheduling livestreams and pre-recorded video releases via its Premieres feature.
  • Facebook Live has also offered scheduling, marketing, and pre-broadcast lobby tools to creators for years.
  • TikTok recently added the ability to schedule TikTok LIVE videos, further emphasizing its commitment to the live format.

The Growing Live Content Market

This launch occurs as the market for live content continues to expand. Instagram recognizes the importance of live streaming, particularly in the realm of real-time e-commerce, a key area of investment for the platform.

Competition is intensifying, with TikTok actively working to integrate live content more deeply into the user experience. TikTok’s recent updates include the discovery of live videos within the main feed and a new “explore” button for browsing live content by category.

Instagram has been refining its overall video strategy recently. The company has discontinued the “IGTV” brand, integrating long-form video content directly into the main Feed.

The IGTV app has been rebranded to serve as a central hub for all Instagram videos, excluding Reels. Reels remain prominently featured within the Instagram app, accessible from multiple locations including the central button, user profiles, Explore page, and hashtag pages.

Availability

The Live Scheduling feature is available to creators globally, starting today. The Practice Mode feature will be rolled out “soon,” according to Instagram.
