Instagram Enhances Content Control for Users

Instagram is providing its user base with increased agency over content discovery. A new feature allows individuals to filter content they may find undesirable within the platform’s exploration section.

Introducing “Sensitive Content Control”

On Tuesday, the company launched a new toggle, termed “Sensitive Content Control.” This control empowers users to screen posts that Instagram identifies as potentially offensive, effectively concealing them from the Explore tab.

The feature is accessible through the settings menu. Users can select from three options: allow more potentially “upsetting or offensive” content, limit such content, or “limit even more.” This acknowledges the inherent challenges in content moderation and the imperfection of current systems.

Defining “Sensitive Content”

Instagram clarifies that “sensitive content” encompasses posts that, while not violating platform rules, may be disturbing to some viewers. Examples include posts with sexually suggestive themes or depictions of violence.

This category serves as a broad classification for material permitted on Instagram but not actively promoted. The platform’s content recommendation guidelines exclude sexually suggestive content, such as images featuring revealing attire, from appearing in the Explore tab.

Furthermore, Instagram’s definition of sensitive content extends to potentially harmful material, including unsubstantiated health claims and advertisements for weight loss products.

Addressing Past Concerns

Instagram has faced criticism for overly strict content moderation, particularly regarding depictions of sexuality. A successful campaign led by plus-size model Nyome Nicholas-Williams prompted the platform to revise a restrictive nudity policy last year.

Empowering User Experience

Instagram frames these new controls as part of a broader initiative to grant users greater control over their experience. “We believe people should be able to shape Instagram into the experience that they want,” the company stated in a blog post.

Recent changes, such as the ability to disable comments, also contribute to this increased user choice.

Balancing Control and Algorithmic Influence

While offering more control in some areas, Instagram is simultaneously exploring ways to exert greater algorithmic influence. Last month, the platform began testing the integration of algorithmic suggestions directly into the main feed.

This design change would allow Instagram to proactively present users with content the company deems relevant, potentially overriding user preferences.
