Instagram Adds Pronoun Display Feature - Stay Updated!

Instagram Introduces Dedicated Pronoun Field
The inclusion of pronouns in Instagram user bios has become increasingly prevalent. Consequently, the platform has now implemented a specific section for users to display their pronouns, optimizing profile space.
This new functionality was revealed via Twitter by the company. Initial availability is limited to select countries, with a broader rollout planned for the near future. Testing confirmed functionality within the U.S. using iOS app version 187.
How to Set Your Pronouns
To configure your pronoun preference, navigate to your profile page. Select “Edit Profile” and locate the designated “Pronouns” field within the options list. This field is distinct from the one found within the “personal information settings.”
Tapping this field allows you to select up to four pronouns that reflect how you wish to be addressed.
The feature restricts users from freely typing in any text. This limitation is likely intended to ensure the field is utilized appropriately and prevents misuse for unrelated purposes.
A comprehensive list of pronouns is provided, and Instagram anticipates expanding this selection based on user feedback. Further details have been requested from the company.
Your chosen pronouns will be displayed adjacent to your username in a subtly shaded typeface. Users also have the option to restrict visibility to their followers, providing control over public disclosure of gender identity.
Alternatively, users can bypass the official pronoun field and express themselves using custom text, emojis, or unique fonts within their bio.
Significance of the Update
While not all individuals feel compelled to share their gender identity, the increasing prevalence of pronoun sharing prompted Instagram to integrate this feature directly into user profiles.
This integration not only conserves valuable bio space – allowing for additional information like hobbies or roles – but also affirms the importance of gender identity alongside other profile details.
The update effectively positions pronouns as a key element of self-expression, comparable in significance to links and biographical information.
