Instacart Launches 'Shopper Safety Alert' Feature

Instacart Enhances Safety Measures for Delivery Personnel

Instacart, the on-demand grocery service, is implementing new safety protocols designed to protect its delivery workers. A newly launched “Shopper Safety Alert” feature is now available, providing delivery providers with notifications regarding critical local incidents.

Real-Time Incident Alerts

This feature utilizes data from law enforcement agencies, social media platforms, and local news sources to generate automated alerts. Delivery personnel located in the vicinity of an incident will receive a notification within the Shopper app.

The alert allows workers to evaluate the situation and, if necessary, avoid the affected area. Should a delivery worker be actively fulfilling an order when an alert is triggered, the app will automatically pause that order.

Operational Pauses and Emergency Assistance

Instacart retains the ability to assess incidents and potentially suspend operations in specific geographic regions if a demonstrable risk to worker safety is identified. This proactive approach aims to prioritize the well-being of its delivery workforce.

Furthermore, the company is upgrading its in-app emergency calling functionality, initially introduced in May 2020. This enhancement allows delivery workers to directly contact emergency services through the app.

RapidSOS Integration for Faster Response

A partnership with RapidSOS, an emergency response data platform, now enables Instacart delivery workers to share their precise geolocation and other pertinent information with emergency responders. This integration is designed to expedite emergency assistance.

Currently, this enhanced feature is available to workers in both the United States and Canada. It mirrors a similar initiative recently undertaken by DoorDash, which collaborated with ADT to provide emergency assistance capabilities to its delivery personnel.

Safety Education and Platform Updates

In addition to these reactive measures, Instacart has introduced optional safety lessons for its delivery workers. These lessons cover best practices related to shopping, driving, and completing deliveries.

The educational materials include a review of Instacart’s shopper and community guidelines, as well as instructions on how to report incidents directly through the Shopper app.

Recent Platform Enhancements and Acquisitions

These new safety features were announced shortly after the rollout of a new delivery option. This option offers reduced or waived delivery fees for orders placed at least 24 hours in advance.

Instacart also recently introduced a dedicated deals tab and a hub specifically for dollar store items, further expanding the platform’s offerings.

Expanding Beyond Grocery Delivery

Beyond platform improvements, Instacart’s recent acquisitions indicate a strategic move towards retail technology. Last month, the company acquired Caper AI, a startup specializing in smart carts and instant checkout technology, for $350 million.

Additionally, Instacart purchased FoodStorm, a SaaS order management system (OMS), for an undisclosed sum, signaling its intent to broaden its capabilities within the retail technology landscape.
