IMI Hacked: British Engineering Firm Suffers Cyberattack

Cybersecurity Incident Reported by IMI
IMI, a British engineering firm, has recently announced a cybersecurity incident. This disclosure follows a similar report from competitor Smiths Group, which also experienced a hacking attempt.
Details of the IMI Incident
Based in Birmingham, IMI specializes in the design and production of components for sectors including industrial automation, transportation, and climate control. A filing made with the London Stock Exchange on Thursday revealed that the company is actively addressing unauthorized access to its systems.
IMI has enlisted the assistance of external cybersecurity specialists to thoroughly investigate the breach and implement containment measures. The company is also committed to fulfilling all relevant regulatory requirements.
Investigation and Data Breach Report
When contacted by TechCrunch for further details, IMI refrained from commenting on the specifics of the incident. It remains unconfirmed whether any company data was compromised and removed from their systems.
The U.K.’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has confirmed receiving a data breach notification from IMI. Lucy Milburn of the ICO stated that the reported information is currently under assessment.
Smiths Group Also Targeted
Last week, Smiths Group, a major U.K. engineering company, announced it was working to restore systems impacted by unauthorized network access.
Currently, neither IMI nor Smiths Group has provided an estimated timeframe for full system recovery.
This article was updated to include a statement from the U.K. ICO.
