Hyundai Offers Free Tesla NACS Adapters to EV Owners

Hyundai Provides Tesla Supercharger Access to Existing EV Owners

Hyundai announced on Monday a program to provide complimentary charging adapters to customers. These customers must have purchased or leased an electric vehicle (EV) on or before January 31st.

The adapters will grant access to Tesla’s extensive supercharging network. Specifically, Hyundai EVs equipped with CCS ports will be able to utilize over 20,000 Tesla Superchargers located throughout the United States.

Eligible Hyundai Models

The offer extends to owners of several Hyundai EV models. Eligible vehicles include the 2024 and earlier model year Kona Electric, Ioniq hatchback, Ioniq 5, and Ioniq 6.

Furthermore, the 2025 model year Ioniq 6, Ioniq 5 N, and Kona Electric are also included in this initiative.

To receive the free adapter, customers are required to submit a request. This request must be made through the official MyHyundai online owner portal.

Industry Shift Towards North American Charging Standard

Adoption of Tesla’s charging connector, known as the North American Charging Standard (NACS), has gained momentum. This acceleration began when both Ford and General Motors revealed plans in 2023 to incorporate NACS into their upcoming EV generations.

These manufacturers also committed to offering adapters for current EV owners. Prior to this, the Combined Charging System (CCS) connector was the standard for nearly all EVs, excluding Tesla vehicles.

Following the lead of Ford and GM, numerous other automakers have established partnerships with Tesla. These collaborations aim to provide customers with NACS adapters.

Some companies, such as Lucid, are taking a more integrated approach. They are planning to directly incorporate the NACS charging port into their future EV designs.

Adapter Rollout and Current Status

The distribution of these adapters hasn’t been without challenges. Many non-Tesla EV owners are still awaiting delivery of their requested adapters.

However, progress is being made, with several automakers initiating adapter shipments in recent months. This indicates a gradual expansion of access to the Tesla Supercharging network for a wider range of EV drivers.
