Control Apple TV with Apple Watch: A Simple Guide

Control Your Apple TV with Your Apple Watch

Why search for your phone or the standard remote when you can manage your TV directly from your wrist? This guide details how to configure your Apple Watch as a remote control for your Apple TV.

Setting Up the Connection

To begin, launch the pre-installed Remote app on your Apple Watch. Take note of the code displayed within the app.

Next, navigate to the settings menu on your Apple TV. From there, select the "Remotes and Devices" option.

Within this menu, you’ll find the ability to add a "Remote App" located under the "Other Devices" category.

Selecting "Remote App" will prompt your Apple TV to detect your Apple Watch. Choose your Watch from the list of available devices.

A screen will appear requesting the code that was shown on your Apple Watch’s Remote app. Enter this code accurately.

Upon successful code entry, your Apple Watch will be paired with your Apple TV. It will then be visible on the main Remote menu. Selecting it will enable control of your Apple TV from your Watch.

Using the Apple Watch Remote App

The Remote app on your Apple Watch mirrors many functions of the Siri Remote. You can swipe across the Watch’s screen to navigate the Apple TV interface, similar to using the touchpad on the Siri Remote.

The Play/Pause function operates as expected, controlling media playback. The "Menu" button will take you back one screen within the Apple TV’s system or the currently open application.

Tapping the three blue lines in the upper left corner of the Remote app will return you to the main screen.

Alternative Control Options

While convenient, the Apple Watch isn't always the most practical remote solution. Fortunately, the Apple Remote iOS app now supports control of 4th generation Apple TVs.

  • This functionality mirrors the experience offered with previous Apple TV generations.
  • It wasn't initially available when the latest Apple TV was first released.

Despite this, utilizing your Watch as a remote remains a useful feature when your primary remote is misplaced or out of reach. It also provides a unique way to showcase Apple’s technology to your friends.
