Unlock Mac with Apple Watch: A Simple Guide

Unlock Your Mac with Your Apple Watch

For users seeking a more convenient login experience, macOS offers the ability to unlock your Mac using your Apple Watch. This feature eliminates the need to repeatedly enter your password each time you activate your laptop.

However, utilizing this functionality requires adherence to specific system requirements.

System Compatibility

Your Mac must be a 2013 model or newer to be compatible. Even if a 2012 Mac possesses Bluetooth 4.0 capability, it will not support this auto-unlock feature. To determine your Mac’s manufacturing date, navigate to the Apple menu and select “About This Mac.”

Furthermore, your Mac needs to be running macOS Sierra or a later version, and your Apple Watch must be updated to watchOS 3 or newer.

Account and Security Settings

Both your Apple Watch and Mac must be signed in to the same iCloud account. Two-factor authentication must also be enabled for your Apple ID.

A password must be set for your Mac user profile, and a passcode must be active on your Apple Watch.

Enabling the Feature

The setup process is straightforward, involving a simple checkbox and password confirmation. Begin by opening the Security & Privacy settings within System Preferences.

Select the “General” tab and then check the box labeled “Allow your Apple Watch to unlock your Mac.”

You will be prompted to confirm this change by entering your system password.

Upon successful completion, the setting will be activated within the Security & Privacy preferences.

Testing the Unlock

To verify functionality, put your Mac to sleep. Ensure your Apple Watch is powered on and in close proximity. When you wake your computer, it should automatically recognize and unlock using your Watch.

A notification will also appear on your Apple Watch, confirming the successful unlock.

Troubleshooting

If the auto-unlock feature fails to operate, confirm that all previously mentioned requirements are met. Both your Mac and Watch must be previously unlocked; unlocking your Mac immediately after a restart will not be possible.

While this feature offers a seamless experience, it necessitates wearing your Apple Watch. It serves as a convenient alternative to methods like Touch ID, particularly for users who frequently step away from and return to their Mac.
