Safari Website Notifications: Enable or Disable - Guide

Managing Safari Website Notifications on Mac

If you are a macOS user and have encountered website notifications appearing in Safari, you may be interested in learning how to disable or re-enable them. The process is straightforward and requires minimal effort.

These notifications typically emerge from the top-right corner of your screen, functioning similarly to other OS X notifications. They generally inform you of new content on websites you've visited, such as new articles or breaking news updates. While they usually disappear quickly, a high volume of notifications can sometimes occur.

Reviewing Notification History

You can access a record of these website notifications by clicking the Notification Center icon located in the upper-right corner of your desktop. This allows you to review any missed notifications and individually dismiss them if desired.

Previously, we provided a detailed overview of the Notification Center; reading that article can offer further insight into its functionalities.

The appearance of these alerts indicates that you previously granted a website permission to send you push notifications.

Disabling or Enabling Notifications

Fortunately, you can easily manage website notifications within Safari's preferences. This can be accessed either through the Safari menu or by utilizing the keyboard shortcut "Command + ,".

After opening the preferences, select the "Notifications" tab. This will display a list of websites that have requested permission to send alerts to your Notification Center.

You can then individually choose to "Allow" or "Deny" notifications for each website. Alternatively, you can "Remove" a single website or opt to "Remove All" permissions at once.

Customizing Notification Styles

If you wish to maintain notifications from a website but adjust their presentation, click the "Notifications Preferences..." button in the Safari preferences tab.

This will launch the system-wide Notifications preferences, providing granular control over each website’s notification style. You can select whether notifications appear as none, banners, or alerts.

Notably, all websites appearing in your Safari notifications are also listed within the Notifications system preferences, offering a centralized management point.

Here, you can further customize settings, including whether notifications are displayed on the lock screen and the number of recent notifications shown in the Notification Center.

We trust this guide has been helpful, particularly if you've been experiencing website push notifications and were unsure how to manage them. Feel free to share any questions or comments in our discussion forum.
