Sync Android Notifications to Windows 10 - Anniversary Update

Synchronizing Android Notifications with Windows 10
The Windows 10 Anniversary Update introduced a straightforward method for viewing your Android phone’s notifications directly on your personal computer. While not as comprehensive as dedicated third-party applications, this feature offers ease of setup and usability.
Setting Up the Connection
The configuration process is primarily completed on your mobile device. It’s important to ensure that Cortana is enabled within Windows 10; otherwise, reactivation will be necessary. Begin by installing the Cortana application from the Google Play Store.
The application indicates that participation in the Windows Insider Program may be required for functionality. If you haven’t already, consider enrolling in the program.
Granting Permissions and Account Linking
After installation, launch Cortana and grant the necessary Android permissions, including access to location and media. Subsequently, log in using the same Microsoft account utilized for your Windows PC. A Microsoft Account is essential for notification synchronization.
Configuring Notification Settings
With Cortana logged in, access the settings menu by tapping the three horizontal lines located in the top-left corner. Select “Settings” from the menu options.
Selecting Notifications to Sync
Within the Settings menu, locate and select “Sync notifications.” Several options are typically pre-selected, such as notifications for missed calls, incoming messages, and low battery status.
To maximize the benefits of notification synchronization, it is recommended to enable the “App notification sync” option, which is disabled by default.
Granting Notification Access
Enabling App Notification Sync will prompt a request for Notification Access. This permission allows applications to view and interact with notifications generated by other apps, raising privacy considerations.
If you consent, tap the “Got it” button, which will redirect you to the Notification Access settings.
Authorizing Cortana
In the Notification Access menu, activate the slider for Cortana. A warning will appear, informing you that this grants Cortana access to all your notifications. Confirm your decision by tapping “Allow.”
Customizing App Notifications
Returning to Cortana’s Settings, you can now activate App Notification Sync. A new menu, “Choose which apps to sync,” will become available. This allows you to selectively choose which applications can send notifications to your PC.
The majority of apps are initially disabled, with Facebook and Facebook Messenger often being exceptions.
Enabling SMS Messaging Sync
It may be necessary to locate your SMS messaging application within the list to enable text message synchronization. The default “Incoming message notification” option may not function correctly; toggling the specific messaging app (e.g., “Messenger”) is often required.
Finalizing the Setup and Potential Issues
Once your desired apps are selected, the setup is complete. Android notifications will now appear as pop-ups on your Windows PC and populate the Action Center.
A reply function is available for certain messages, such as text messages, but this feature remains in beta and may be unreliable. Consistent functionality cannot be guaranteed.
Alternative Solutions
For a more robust and dependable experience, consider exploring established third-party services. These alternatives often provide a wider range of features and greater stability, as Cortana’s notification sync is still under development.
Despite its limitations, this method offers a convenient way to preview incoming notifications and prioritize responses, determining whether immediate attention is required or if a delayed response is sufficient.
