Kindle DRM Removal: Read Ebooks on Any Device & Archive

Unlocking Your Kindle Library: A Guide to Backup and Transfer
Many readers simply wish to retain access to the digital books they've legitimately purchased. This guide provides a pathway to backing up your Kindle ebooks and enjoying them across a variety of devices.
Why Backup Your Kindle Books?
Unlike physical books, digital purchases often come with restrictions. Backing up your Kindle library safeguards your investment against potential loss of access. It also allows for greater flexibility in how and where you read.
Liberating Your Digital Content
The process of creating backups and transferring your ebooks is often referred to as "liberating" them. This isn't about piracy; it's about exercising control over content you already own.
Getting Started: The Basics
This guide focuses on enabling you to read your purchased ebooks on the devices of your choosing. We will outline the steps necessary to achieve this without infringing on copyright.
It’s important to remember that you are entitled to enjoy the books you have legally acquired. This process simply facilitates that right.
Understanding File Formats
Kindle books are often protected by DRM (Digital Rights Management). Removing DRM is a necessary step to allow for broader compatibility. Common ebook formats include:
- AZW/AZW3: Kindle's proprietary formats.
- MOBI: An older ebook format, widely supported.
- EPUB: A popular, open-standard ebook format.
Converting between these formats may be required for optimal reading on different devices.
Tools and Resources
Several tools can assist in backing up and converting your Kindle books. Researching these options will help you find the best solution for your needs.
Remember to always download software from trusted sources to ensure your security.
Reading on Your Preferred Devices
Once your ebooks are backed up and converted, you can enjoy them on a wide range of devices, including tablets, smartphones, and computers.
This provides a seamless reading experience tailored to your preferences.
The Rationale Behind DRM Removal
A significant portion of contemporary media, encompassing everything from acquired television programs and ebooks to physical formats like DVDs, incorporates Digital Rights Management (DRM) technologies. These DRM systems are implemented by publishers as a protective measure against unauthorized copying and to regulate consumer usage of purchased media.
Specifically, DRM often dictates where and on what devices content can be accessed, potentially limiting user flexibility. We, however, believe that once media has been legitimately purchased, consumers should have unrestricted access.
This philosophy directly informed our decision to publish The How-To Geek Guide to Windows 8 without DRM. We hold our readership, as consumers and individuals, in high regard and refuse to impose limitations on their enjoyment of purchased products.
The effectiveness of DRM as an anti-piracy tool is questionable. Individuals determined to pirate content are unlikely to be deterred by DRM, especially given the widespread availability of DRM-free copies online.
Therefore, DRM primarily inconveniences legitimate customers while offering no real obstacle to those intent on illegal distribution.
Removing DRM While Supporting Creators
The following guide details how to remove DRM from legally purchased ebooks, allowing you to enjoy your content on your preferred devices. This empowers you to support content creators through legitimate purchases while retaining control over your media.
It’s important to understand that this tutorial is designed solely for removing DRM from ebooks you have legitimately acquired. The methods described will not function with ebooks borrowed from libraries, loaned copies, or any other ebooks for which you are not the original purchaser.
Important Considerations
- Legality: Ensure you are only removing DRM from content you have legally purchased.
- Purpose: The goal is to enhance your experience with legitimately acquired media, not to facilitate piracy.
- Limitations: This guide focuses on ebook DRM removal; other media types may require different tools and techniques.
By proceeding, you acknowledge your responsibility to use these tools ethically and legally.

This guide details the process of removing Digital Rights Management (DRM) from your Kindle eBooks. This allows for greater flexibility in how and where you enjoy your purchased content, as well as enabling archiving.
To proceed, three key components are required. These include a copy of the Calibre eBook Manager, Apprentice Alf's DRM Removal Tools for eBooks, and the Kindle eBook itself.
Required Components
- Calibre Ebook Manager: This software is essential for managing and processing your eBook library.
- Apprentice Alf's DRM Removal Tools: These plugins are specifically designed to remove DRM protection.
- Kindle eBook: The eBook from which you intend to remove the DRM.
- (Optional) Kindle for PC: While not mandatory, the Kindle for PC application simplifies access to your eBooks.
The Calibre eBook Manager and Apprentice Alf's DRM-stripping plugins are absolutely necessary. Utilizing the Kindle for PC application is optional, but it streamlines the process of accessing all your Kindle books simultaneously.
This tutorial will not cover the installation and usage of Calibre. If you are unfamiliar with Calibre, we suggest consulting our comprehensive guide: How To Organize Your Ebook Collection with Calibre.
Important Considerations
Before continuing, a couple of points should be noted. The instructions provided are demonstrated using Windows 7, but the same techniques can be applied on OS X with the OS X version of Calibre.
The Apprentice Alf DRM removal package includes standalone tools for both Windows and OS X. However, these tools necessitate additional configuration, including Python installation and dependency management.
Therefore, we will focus on the Calibre-based workflow, which is considerably more efficient. Should you choose to utilize the standalone tools, reviewing the included readme.txt file is recommended. Furthermore, given the need for an eBook management solution for organizing and transferring your DRM-free collection, leveraging a leading tool like Calibre is advantageous.
Installing Apprentice Alf's DRM Removal Plugins
These DRM removal plugins are remarkably effective. Not only do they function reliably, but they also automatically remove DRM from any newly added, protected books within Calibre, provided they remain installed.
Navigate to Apprentice Alf's DRM removal page to obtain the latest version of the DRM removal tools. Currently, this is version 6.05, accessible here.
Unzip the downloaded file to a temporary directory. The archive contains several folders, but the relevant one is \DeDRM_calibre_plugin\; within this folder, you'll find DeDRM_plugin.zip. Ensure the archive is extracted correctly and the zip file is present before proceeding.
Open Calibre and click "Preferences" on the toolbar. Select "Change calibre behavior" (or press CTRL+P). Avoid choosing "Get plugins to enhance calibre," as this accesses only the official Calibre plugin repository.
Scroll down to the Advanced section and select "Plugins."
In the Plugins menu, click the "Load plugin from file" button located in the lower right corner.
Browse to the location of DeDRM_plugin.zip, select it, and add it to Calibre. A warning message regarding the risks of installing third-party plugins will appear. Confirm by clicking "OK." A dialog box will then confirm the successful installation.
Click "OK" and verify that DeDRM is listed within the "File type plugins" section. Finally, click "Apply" in the upper left corner, close the Preferences pane, and restart Calibre to complete the installation.
Removing DRM from eBooks with Apprentice Alf's Plugins
We are now prepared to begin the process of removing Digital Rights Management (DRM) from your eBooks. The DRM-removal plugins function by automatically stripping DRM during the import of books into Calibre. Should you have previously imported DRM-protected books into Calibre, re-exporting and then re-importing them is necessary to activate the DRM-removal procedure.
For books not yet present in Calibre, simply dragging and dropping the file into the Calibre interface—or utilizing the "Import file" function—will initiate the DRM stripping process.
Several methods exist for obtaining your DRM-protected Kindle eBooks. These include:
- Mounting your Kindle as a USB drive and transferring the files.
- Downloading them through the "Actions" menu within the "Manage Your Kindle" section of your Amazon account.
- Utilizing the Kindle for PC application.
Each technique will now be examined to highlight its advantages and disadvantages, as well as the necessary steps for implementation.
Transferring Books Directly from Your Kindle: If you intend to extract the eBook directly from your Kindle device, or employ the download and transfer method, you must first manually input your Kindle’s serial number into the DeDRM removal plugin. Navigate to Preferences, then Advanced, then Plugins, and finally File type plugins to locate and double-click the DeDRM entry.

Select the "eInk Kindle ebooks" entry, and within the subsequent dialog box, click the "+" symbol to enter the serial number found on the back of your Kindle.

Carefully verify the serial number; any mismatch between the serial number within the book file and the plugin’s configuration will result in decryption failure.
Obtaining Books via Download & Transfer: Another approach involves downloading the book directly from your Amazon account’s "Manage Your Kindle" page. An "Actions" dropdown menu is located to the right of each book’s listing.

Our testing revealed several drawbacks to this method. It requires selecting a physical Kindle as the destination device and entering the device’s serial number into DeDRM, mirroring the previous step. Furthermore, this technique proved the least consistently successful in our evaluations. While you may attempt this approach, we cannot recommend it given the reliability of the other two methods.
Downloading Books Through Kindle for PC: If you have transferred your Kindle books to the Kindle for PC application—a method we highly recommend due to its simplicity—the locally stored books can be found in the following directory:
C:\Users\[Your Windows Username]\Documents\My Kindle Content
Each imported Kindle book will include two accompanying files (.MBP and .PHL); these extraneous file types can be disregarded. Books may also have unconventional names, such as "B001QTXLQ4_EBOK". Do not be concerned, as the correct title and author information are stored within the files. This method allows you to acquire all your books at once and import them into Calibre.
Simply select all the actual book files (.AZW, .TPZ, and .MOBI) and import them into Calibre.
Calibre will import any eBook file, regardless of DRM status, without issue. The true test of successful import and DRM removal is attempting to convert the book to a different format. Right-click the book’s entry and select "Convert Books" then "Convert Individually". This will open the conversion menu. Convert it to any desired format.
If the book’s DRM has not been successfully removed, an error message similar to the following will appear:

However, this error doesn’t necessarily indicate a problem with the DeDRM plugin. Incorrectly entering the serial number when loading books from your physical Kindle will cause this failure. Attempting to add Kindle books that you do not own will also result in an error.
Using the correct source will initiate the process successfully. You’ll observe the “Jobs” indicator in the lower right corner animating. Clicking it reveals the conversion process (note the "Error" entries, which represent books intentionally used for testing that did not meet the DRM-removal criteria).

The final outcome is a DRM-free eBook, successfully converted to a standard MOBI file—ready for transfer to any device or conversion into a new format.
This completes the process! Repeat these steps for any Kindle book you wish to liberate for use on your preferred device, or to back up independently of the Amazon ecosystem.
