Share Folders in Windows Vista - XP Compatibility

Sharing Folders in Windows Vista: A Familiar Approach
Numerous requests have been received regarding the process of folder sharing. While seemingly straightforward for many, a source of user confusion has been identified. Windows Vista introduced a "Share" button within the explorer toolbar.
However, this button functions differently than its counterparts in Windows XP or Windows 2000. Instead of direct sharing, it initiates a wizard intended to simplify the process.
The Default Sharing Behavior
By default, the share button does not allow users to specify a custom name for the shared folder. This can be inconvenient.
Furthermore, sharing a folder located within a user's directory often results in a complex share name, such as \\computer\Users\geek\Contacts. Remembering such a name can prove challenging.
If you desire the folder sharing experience familiar from Windows XP, a simple alternative exists. Simply right-click on the desired folder and select the "Properties" option.
Accessing Advanced Sharing Options
Within the Properties window, select the "Advanced Sharing" button to proceed.
This will open a new window where you can exert greater control over the sharing process.
Customizing the Share Name
Now, you are able to check the box labeled "Share this folder".
Crucially, you can also define a custom share name. This name will be used to access the folder from the network, for example, via \\computer\myshare.
Managing Permissions
For further control, click the "Permissions" button. This allows you to configure access rights.
You can grant write access to the share, enabling others to modify files within the folder. Alternatively, you can restrict access to specific users only.
By utilizing these steps, you can effectively share folders in Windows Vista, mirroring the functionality preferred by many users of earlier Windows versions.
