Hide iMessage Read Receipts: Stop People Knowing You've Read Their Texts

Controlling Read Receipts in iMessage

iMessage, utilized on both iPhones and Macs, typically indicates to the sender when a message has been read. While this functionality can be useful in certain situations, it isn't always desired.

Understanding iMessage and SMS

The Messaging application on Apple’s iOS and macOS platforms supports two distinct message types. These are traditional text messages, which leverage your mobile carrier’s SMS infrastructure, and iMessages, which are delivered instantly via a data connection.

For an iMessage to be sent and received, both parties must be using Apple devices – either an iPhone, iPad, or Mac – and have access to a data network.

Features Unique to iMessage

iMessage provides several capabilities not available with standard text messaging. These include indicators showing when a contact is actively typing a response, enhanced group chat functionality, and the aforementioned read receipts.

If you wish to disable the notification that confirms you've viewed an iMessage, a straightforward solution is available.

How to Disable Read Receipts

You can easily manage whether or not read receipts are sent. This allows you to maintain your privacy and control the information shared with your contacts.

  • On iPhone: Go to Settings > Messages and toggle “Read Receipts” on or off.
  • On Mac: Open Messages > Preferences > iMessage and uncheck “Show read receipts.”

Disabling read receipts will prevent others from seeing when you’ve opened their iMessages, while still allowing you to see when they’ve read yours (if they haven't disabled them as well).

Managing iMessage Read Receipts on iPhone

iPhone users have the capability to control whether read receipts are sent for iMessages. This can be configured for all contacts, or selectively for individual conversations, depending on the iOS version.

Disabling Read Receipts Globally

The primary method for managing iMessage read receipts involves utilizing the iPhone’s Settings application. Navigate to the Settings app and scroll down to locate and select the “Messages” option.

Within the Messages settings, you will find a toggle labeled “Send Read Receipts.” Switching this toggle will either enable or disable the feature for all contacts.

Controlling Read Receipts Per Contact

For those running iOS 10 or later, a more granular level of control is available. It’s possible to manage read receipts on a per-conversation basis.

To access these settings, open the specific message thread in the Messages app. Tap the “i” icon located in the top-right corner of the screen.

This action will reveal options to control read receipts for that particular conversation. You can then adjust the setting to align with your preferences, regardless of the global setting.

The status indicators visible to senders are affected by this setting. When read receipts are disabled, senders will still be informed when a message has been successfully delivered.

However, confirmation of the message being read will no longer be provided. It's important to note that adding new contacts may automatically re-enable read receipts if the global toggle remains active.

To prevent this automatic enablement, ensure the global “Send Read Receipts” toggle is disabled in the Settings app. This will necessitate individually re-enabling read receipts for any contacts where you desire to share read status.

Deactivating Read Receipts in iMessage on macOS

The Messages application within recent macOS versions fully supports the iMessage functionality. Disabling read receipts within the Mac’s Messages app is a straightforward process. Similar to iOS, this setting can be adjusted for all contacts or selectively for individual contacts, provided you are utilizing macOS Sierra.

It’s important to remember that if you access messages on both your Mac and your iOS device, you must disable read receipts on both platforms for consistent privacy.

Disabling for All Contacts

Begin by opening the Messages app on your Mac. Navigate to the Messages menu in the Apple menu bar and select “Preferences.” This will open the application’s settings window.

Within the Preferences window, click on the “Accounts” tab. On the left-hand side, select your active iMessage account. Subsequently, on the right-hand side, uncheck the box labeled “Send read receipts.” You can then close the Preferences window to save your changes.

Disabling for Individual Contacts

macOS Sierra introduces the ability to manage read receipts on a per-conversation basis. To access this feature, open any message thread and click the “Details” option located in the upper-right corner of the window.

Within the Details pane, you will find the option to “Send Read Receipts.” Toggle this setting to either enable or disable it. The initial state of this option will reflect your globally configured read receipt preferences.

By deactivating read receipts, you gain the freedom to review messages at your convenience, without the immediate expectation of a response. Furthermore, if you generally prefer to have read receipts enabled, you can easily disable them temporarily for specific messages when discretion is desired. Enjoy the enhanced control over your messaging experience!
