Manage Slack Notifications & Do Not Disturb - A Guide

Managing Slack Notifications for Enhanced Productivity
Slack has evolved into a crucial communication platform for numerous organizations, particularly those with a distributed workforce. However, constant alerts can be disruptive and detract from focused work.
Here at How-To Geek, we recognize the value of Slack and have previously offered guidance on maximizing its capabilities, including effective search techniques. In today’s interconnected environment, managing notifications is essential for maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
Quickly Addressing Notifications
You can promptly review notifications by selecting the bell icon located at the top of the navigation panel. A key feature is the ability to snooze notifications. This temporarily silences all alerts for a defined period, ranging from 20 minutes to a full 24 hours.

Utilizing Do Not Disturb (DND)
A particularly useful addition to Slack is the Do Not Disturb schedule. Consider DND as a pre-set snooze function. While not mandatory, activating DND informs Slack when to refrain from sending notifications.
For instance, you might choose to disable notifications during evening hours, preventing interruptions after your workday concludes. Critical messages can still reach you, as colleagues have the option to override DND when sending urgent communications.

Channel-Specific Notification Settings
To customize notification preferences for a specific channel, click on "Settings for #[channel]". You even have the option to completely mute notifications originating from that channel.

Global Notification Preferences
Selecting "Your Notification Preferences" allows you to define the conditions that trigger notifications. If your workspace is highly active, you may prefer to receive alerts only for direct messages or when your name – or a designated “highlight word” – is mentioned.

Customizing Alert Sounds and System Alerts
Slack provides a selection of 11 alert sounds, or you can opt for no sound at all. You can also silence all system alerts and direct messages if desired.

Controlling Message Content in Notifications
To prevent message content from appearing in notifications, disable that specific feature. Further configuration options for notification behavior are also available below this setting.
The OS X version of the Slack client offers options for how notifications are displayed in the Dock.

Windows Client Notification Options
On the Windows client, Slack can be configured to flash a window upon receiving a notification, as Windows does not have a Dock.

Browser-Based Slack Notifications
When using Slack in a web browser, you won't find the same detailed notification options. You may be prompted to allow desktop notifications, and you can then control their frequency or disable them entirely.

Leveraging Highlight Words
The “Highlight Words” feature is particularly valuable. If you’ve configured notifications to include “Direct messages and highlight words,” you can specify keywords that will trigger an alert. These could be your department name, a nickname, or a relevant conversation topic.
Enter the desired words, separated by commas, and Slack will notify you whenever they are mentioned.

Mobile Notifications (iOS and Android)
The Slack client on iOS supports push notifications, but most management is handled through the standard iPhone or iPad settings.

Similarly, the Android app primarily relies on the system’s settings for notification control, though a few options are available within the app itself. These options largely mirror those found on the iOS version.

Effective use of Slack notifications can significantly improve your work-life balance. Remember that you don’t need to be alerted to every message, that you can focus on specific keywords, and that you can disable notifications entirely when unavailable.
Ultimately, while Slack is a powerful tool for collaboration and productivity, it’s crucial to prioritize focused work time.
