Stop Netflix Data Usage: How to Limit Streaming on Mobile

Netflix Mobile Data Control: A New Feature
Recently, Netflix implemented a highly requested update to its mobile application. Users can now manage their data consumption, preventing exceeding their cellular data allowances.
Streaming on Netflix can consume significant data, approximately 1 GB per hour for standard definition video. This can be problematic for individuals utilizing mobile data plans with usage limits.
To regulate data usage on your smartphone or tablet, ensure you have installed the newest Netflix application version. Updates are available through the App Store for iOS devices and the Play Store for Android.
Begin by tapping the menu icon, represented by three horizontal lines, located in the upper-left corner of the screen. This will reveal the side navigation panel.
Next, select "App Settings" from the options presented within the panel.
By default, "Cellular Data Usage" is configured to "Set Automatically." Disabling this setting grants access to five distinct data control levels.
- Off (Wi-Fi only): Content playback is restricted to Wi-Fi networks. Streaming is unavailable when connected to cellular data.
- Low: Data usage averages approximately 1 GB for every four hours of viewing.
- Medium: At this setting, expect to use around 1 GB of data every two hours.
- High: This setting mirrors Wi-Fi quality and consumes roughly 1 GB per hour.
- Unlimited: Designed for users with unlimited data plans, this option delivers the highest video quality, including 4K content if your subscription supports it. Activation is not recommended without an unlimited plan.
It’s important to acknowledge that lower data settings will result in reduced video quality. However, this trade-off can be worthwhile to avoid surpassing your data cap.
Regardless of the chosen setting, consistently monitoring your data usage and remaining allowance is crucial, irrespective of your device’s operating system.
