Sierra Picture in Picture: Netflix, YouTube & Unsupported Sites

Enabling Picture-in-Picture for Netflix and YouTube on macOS Sierra
The native Picture-in-Picture (PiP) functionality within macOS Sierra does not inherently extend support to popular streaming platforms like Netflix and YouTube.
However, this limitation can be readily overcome through the utilization of a Safari extension.
Utilizing a Safari Extension
A dedicated Safari extension introduces a streamlined solution, providing a specific button designed to activate PiP for videos originating from these websites.
This extension simplifies the process, allowing users to detach videos from Netflix and YouTube and view them in a floating window with a single click.
Consequently, users can continue to work on other tasks while simultaneously enjoying video content in a resizable and movable window.
The extension effectively bridges the gap in native support, enhancing the viewing experience on macOS Sierra.
Installing Pied PíPer
Currently, the PiedPíPer extension is not available through the official Safari Extensions Gallery. However, installation remains straightforward. Navigate to the Pied PíPer project page on GitHub and download the Installable Version, which has the .safariextz file extension.
The downloaded file will be located within your Downloads directory.

Double-click the downloaded file to initiate the installation process. You will then be prompted with a confirmation request.

Select "Trust" to proceed with the installation.

The extension is now successfully installed and ready for use. It’s time to verify its functionality.
Testing the Installation
Following installation, it is recommended to test the PiedPíPer extension to ensure it is functioning correctly. This can be done by attempting to utilize Picture-in-Picture mode on a supported website.
Utilizing Picture in Picture Mode for Netflix and YouTube
Let's begin by navigating to YouTube and selecting a detailed analysis of current political events.
As illustrated in the image below, a new control has been introduced. Simply activate this button…

…and the video will be detached from the main browser window.

Previously, YouTube’s Picture In Picture functionality was accessible via a simple double-right-click. However, Netflix did not natively support this feature. After installing PiedPiPer, accessing any Netflix video reveals an additional new control.

Selecting this control will allow the video to be displayed outside of the Netflix interface.

As of the current date, the extension provides compatibility with two further platforms: the video sharing website DailyMotion, and the web-based interface for Plex. This expands the range of content viewable in a floating window.
Supported Platforms
- YouTube
- Netflix
- DailyMotion
- Plex (web interface)
For many users, the primary benefit lies in enabling Picture In Picture for Netflix. While native support from Netflix would be ideal, this extension serves as a valuable interim solution.
