Install Older iOS Apps: A Guide for Old iPhones & iPads

Reviving Older iPads with Compatible App Versions

Even if your older iPad continues to function reliably, limitations can arise when app developers cease support for older iOS versions.

This can result in incompatibility issues, effectively restricting access to updated applications.

Addressing App Compatibility on Legacy Devices

Fortunately, a workaround exists to install previous iterations of apps on your older iPad.

This allows continued use of favored applications even if the device cannot be upgraded to the latest iOS.

How to Install Older App Versions

The process involves utilizing Apple's App Store purchase history to re-download previously installed app versions.

This method doesn't require jailbreaking or circumventing Apple’s security measures, offering a safe and straightforward solution.

  • First, locate the App Store on your iPad.
  • Navigate to your account settings.
  • Access your purchase history.
  • Find the app you wish to reinstall.
  • If older versions are available, a download option will appear.

Selecting this option will initiate the installation of a compatible app version for your device’s iOS.

It’s important to note that this method relies on Apple retaining older app versions within its servers.

While this technique provides a valuable solution, it’s not guaranteed to work for all apps or all users.

However, it represents a viable option for extending the usability of an older iPad.

The Compatibility Challenge: Older iOS Versions and Modern Apps

Currently, iOS 9 is the prevailing operating system, with iOS 10 anticipated for release in the coming months. While Apple generally provides commendable support for older hardware with each iOS iteration, all platforms eventually reach their limitations. For instance, the iPhone 4 is capped at iOS 7.1.2, and the original iPad is limited to iOS 5.1.1. Each new iOS release inevitably leaves some legacy hardware behind.

Being restricted to older software is a common occurrence, but it can be a source of annoyance. Many users discontinue using these older, yet functional, devices not due to a desire for the latest iOS features, but because of the difficulty in downloading applications.

The App Store's configuration consistently directs users to the most recent application version. This approach is logical from Apple’s perspective – offering the newest, most secure, and bug-free software is preferable. However, when using an older device, this can result in incompatibility. Searching for an app on an iPad 1, for example, may yield a message stating it requires iOS 7 (or 8, or 9) and cannot be installed, even if a version compatible with iOS 5 previously existed.

However, it's possible to download older app versions to older iOS devices legally and without jailbreaking, using a straightforward method.

Before detailing this process, it’s important to acknowledge a key limitation: this method only functions for apps that previously offered versions compatible with your device’s operating system. You cannot download an iOS 5 version of an app that was never designed to run on iOS 5.

Keeping this in mind, let's explore how to populate your older iPad 1 with applications without encountering frustration.

Downloading Previous App Versions on Legacy Devices

As previously mentioned, attempting to install applications on older devices running outdated operating systems, such as an iPad with iOS 5, often results in failure. The vast majority of apps—even older ones—will likely be incompatible due to the age of iOS 5.

However, a solution exists. If you acquire or download the current version of an application on a more recent iOS device, or through iTunes on a computer, older versions become accessible to your legacy device. Apple’s policy ensures that any app you’ve purchased, including free ones, remains available for download on all devices linked to your account.

When an older device requests an app from your library—rather than directly from the App Store—the system will search for a compatible, older version and install it if available.

We will illustrate this process using the comic book reader, Comic Zeal. Trying to download Comic Zeal onto an older device will likely produce an installation error, as the app currently requires iOS 8.2 or later.

To install Comic Zeal on the older iPad, a brief detour to a computer or newer iOS device is necessary. The choice of which to use matters only when dealing with iPad-exclusive applications; an iPhone search won’t display iPad-only apps.

In this example, we’ll utilize iTunes. Launch the software and enter the application’s name in the search bar. Select the app from the search results.

Click the "Buy" or "Get" button, depending on whether the application is a paid or free download.

After clicking "Get" or "Buy", it’s not necessary to wait for the download to complete on your computer. In fact, we advise against it, as the downloaded version will be the latest, incompatible one.

With the app now purchased, navigate to your older iOS device and search for the application within the App Store. Alternatively, tap the "Purchased" icon located in the bottom navigation bar.

Locate the app and then select the "Install" button.

Upon clicking "Install", a prompt will appear, indicating the availability of an older, compatible version of the app. Select "Download" to obtain the last version that supports your device’s iOS version.

The app will then install successfully, allowing you to use it, though some features from newer updates may be absent.

While not the most streamlined method, this workaround effectively extends the usability of older hardware.
