For individuals who frequently engage in multitasking, virtual desktops represent a highly effective solution. These systems enable users to operate multiple desktop environments concurrently on either a laptop or desktop computer. Switching between these environments is achieved with a simple click.
Benefits of Virtual Desktops
Each virtual desktop can be customized with a unique background and a dedicated set of running applications.
A common use case is segregating work-related applications from personal ones, streamlining workflow and reducing clutter. While not a native feature of Windows XP, readily available and secure software can provide up to four virtual desktops.
Installing DeskMan for Windows XP
To begin, navigate to the Microsoft PowerToys download page. From the right-hand side of the page, select DeskMan.exe. The downloaded file will be named DeskmanPowertoySetup.exe.
Execute the downloaded file by double-clicking it and choose the "Complete" installation option. The installation process is typically swift.

Testing the Installation
Following installation, verify its functionality. Right-click on the taskbar at the screen's bottom and select "Toolbars." A new option, "Desktop Manager," will now be visible.

Selecting "Desktop Manager" will display a toolbar integrated into your taskbar, as shown below:

Utilizing the Desktop Manager
Each of the four buttons represents a distinct virtual desktop. The green button on the left activates a preview of all four desktops, allowing for easy selection.
Right-clicking any button reveals options for customizing desktop backgrounds or assigning keyboard shortcuts for quick access.

With these simple steps…

Accessing Your Virtual Desktops
You now have access to four separate desktop environments! Clicking on any desktop within the preview screen will bring that environment to the forefront. (It's worth noting that virtual desktops are also available in Windows Vista, though that is the subject of a separate guide.)
Download Virtual Desktop Manager from microsoft.com.
