Improve Skype Video Quality: Tips for Clearer Calls

Improving Skype Video Call Quality
Skype’s video calling functionality generally provides a high standard of image clarity. However, subtle adjustments can further enhance the visual experience. This guide details a method to optimize your Skype video calls, particularly relevant following the release of Skype Beta 3.6.
Tweaking Settings for Enhanced Quality
It is possible to manually adjust settings to achieve a larger 640 x 480 webcam window, resulting in improved picture and audio fidelity. This approach allows users to bypass waiting for official updates that may incorporate these improvements.

Modifying the config.xml File
Navigate to your Skype folder, typically located within your "Documents and Settings" directory. Locate and open the file named "config.xml". Within this file, identify the section designated for video settings, which begins with the tag <video>.
Insert the following lines within the <video> section:
- <CaptureHeight>480</CaptureHeight>
- <CaptureWidth>640</CaptureWidth>
- <Device>enter the name of your webcam device here!</Device>
- <Fps>25</Fps>
Save the changes made to the "config.xml" file and close it.
Installing and Configuring ffdshow-tryout
Download and install the ffdshow-tryout software. The installation process can be somewhat complex. It’s crucial to configure the software correctly for optimal results.
Specifically, ensure that the "Raw video" setting is configured to support "all supported" formats. Additionally, verify that the "Deinterlacing" checkbox is selected.
Testing the Changes
Restart Skype after completing the configuration steps. Initiate a video call with a contact who also has a webcam. If the adjustments were implemented successfully, you should observe a larger video window and a noticeable improvement in overall quality.
The resulting video should display with enhanced clarity and a more expansive view.
