Factory Reset PS4: A Step-by-Step Guide

Preparing Your PlayStation 4 for Sale: A Complete Reset Guide
When you intend to sell your PlayStation 4 console, a thorough reset is crucial. This process involves deactivating your PlayStation Network (PSN) account and removing all personal data.
Deactivating Your PSN Account
Prior to wiping the system, it’s essential to deactivate your PSN account. This allows the subsequent owner to sign in with their own credentials without issue.
Restoring Factory Settings: A Step-by-Step Approach
Completely restoring your PS4 to its factory settings ensures all data is removed. This returns the console to the original condition it was in when first purchased.
The process involves a complete wipe of the hard drive. This action effectively removes all user data and installed applications.
Why Reset Your PS4 Before Selling?
- Data Security: Protect your personal information by removing all saved data.
- Seamless Transfer: Enable the new owner to easily set up the console with their own account.
- Optimal Performance: Ensure the console operates as it did when new.
Following these steps will guarantee a smooth transition for both you and the buyer. It safeguards your privacy and provides the new owner with a fresh, ready-to-use gaming experience.
Step One: Disconnecting Your PSN Account
Removing your PSN account association from your PS4 doesn't result in complete account deletion. Instead, it simply dislinks the account from that particular console. This process is comparable to disabling "Find My iPhone" and logging out of iCloud on an iPhone prior to resale.
Navigate to the main screen on your PS4 and press the "Up" button on the controller to reveal your recent notifications.

Press "Right" on your controller until you reach the "Settings" option. Then, select it to proceed.

Scroll down the settings menu and select "PlayStation Network/Account Management".

Within this menu, choose "Activate as Your Primary PS4".

The "Deactivate" option may initially appear unavailable, indicating your account is already disassociated. However, to ensure complete removal, it's advisable to first activate and then deactivate. Instances have been reported where sellers believed they had deactivated their account, only for the new owner to encounter login issues due to the seller’s lingering association.

Confirm the process by clicking "OK" when prompted.

Select "Activate as Your Primary PS4" once more.

Now, select the "Deactivate" option.

A confirmation screen will appear. Select "Yes" to proceed with the deactivation.

Click "OK" to finalize the deactivation process.

The PS4 will then restart. Press the PS button on your controller to return to the main menu.

After the restart, select your user account. Note that this is distinct from your PSN account.

You will then be redirected back to the main menu.

Step Two: Performing a PS4 System Wipe
Having deactivated your PSN account on the PS4 console, the next step involves a complete system erasure. This process will remove all data and restore the console to its original factory settings.
From the PS4’s main menu, press the "Up" button on the controller. This action will display your most recent notifications.

Utilize the "Right" directional button on your controller to navigate to "Settings". Then, select this option to proceed.

Scroll down the settings menu until you locate and select "Initialization".

Choose the "Initialize PS4" option from the displayed list.

You will be presented with two initialization modes: "Quick" and "Full". The "Quick" option performs a rapid data wipe, but offers limited security. Data recovery may be possible with specialized tools.

Selecting "Full" initialization ensures a secure data wipe, preventing subsequent data recovery attempts. Be aware that this process can require several hours to complete. Choosing the Full initialization is generally recommended.

After making your selection, choose "Initialize" to confirm the operation.

A subsequent confirmation screen will appear. Select "Yes" to proceed with the initialization.

The PS4 will restart, and the initialization process will commence. Even if the estimated completion time appears short initially, the process can take a minimum of a couple of hours.

Upon completion, a setup guide will be displayed, prompting you to connect your PS4 controller via a USB cable.

At this stage, power down the console by holding the power button until a beep is heard. Then, disconnect the power cable, package the console, and prepare it for sale or transfer.
