Drag and Drop to Taskbar in Windows 7 | How-To Guide

Windows 7 Taskbar: Re-enabling File Opening Functionality
Many users have noticed a change in default behavior within Windows 7. Previously, dropping files onto application shortcuts on the taskbar would directly open them. However, this functionality is no longer active by default.
Attempting to drag and drop a file onto a taskbar icon now prompts the user to "Pin to Application". This results in the file being added as a pinned item, rather than being opened by the associated program.
Restoring the Original Behavior
To revert to the previous functionality, a simple modification to the drag-and-drop process is required. Instead of simply dragging the file, users must hold down the Shift key during the drag operation.
When the Shift key is held, the prompt changes from "Pin to Application" to "Open with Application". This ensures the file is opened with the correct program, as intended.
This adjustment restores the convenience of quickly opening files directly from the taskbar. It represents a minor, yet impactful, improvement to workflow efficiency.
It’s a straightforward solution that can significantly reduce the time spent on routine file management tasks.
