PlayStation 4 Privacy Settings: A Comprehensive Guide

The PlayStation 4 console features a dashboard reminiscent of social media platforms. This allows friends to see your gaming activity, potentially including your real name.

Furthermore, if a connection to Facebook has been established, your PlayStation 4 account could become visible to contacts on that platform.

Managing Your Privacy

Users have full control over their privacy preferences on the PlayStation 4. These settings can be adjusted to align with individual comfort levels.

Accessing these controls is straightforward. Navigate to the Settings screen directly from the console’s home screen.

To begin, on the PlayStation 4 home screen, press the "Up" button on your controller.

Then, scroll to the right until the "Settings" icon is highlighted, and select it.

Accessing Account Options

Within the Settings menu, choose "PlayStation Network/Account Management." This will lead you to the options for managing your account.

From here, you can refine your privacy settings and control what information is shared with others.

This section allows for granular control over your online presence on the PlayStation Network.

You can customize visibility settings to ensure a comfortable and secure gaming experience.

Connecting and Managing Social Media on Your PlayStation 4

The "Link with Other Services" option allows users to manage connections between their PlayStation 4 console and various social media platforms. These include popular services such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Dailymotion.

Linking Your Accounts

Through this feature, you can determine which social media services are associated with your PlayStation 4. This primarily facilitates the sharing of screenshots and video clips directly to your connected social media profiles.

The PlayStation 4 system is designed to prevent unauthorized sharing; no content will be posted without explicit user consent. However, linking to Facebook, for example, will enable your friends on that platform to locate your PlayStation 4 account.

Customizing Privacy Settings

Detailed control over Facebook integration is available within the privacy settings. Users can fine-tune how information is shared. Alternatively, the Facebook account can be unlinked entirely if desired.

If you haven't yet connected your Facebook account, selecting "Facebook" will initiate the login process. This allows you to establish the link and begin sharing your PlayStation 4 experiences.

Account Restrictions

It's important to note that only the holder of the master account on the PlayStation 4 has the authority to link social media accounts. Users with sub-accounts do not possess this permission.

Managing Your PlayStation Privacy Settings

To modify your privacy preferences on your PlayStation system, navigate to the "Privacy Settings" area within the PlayStation Network/Account Management menu.

A password for your PlayStation Network account will be required to proceed with any changes.

Upon successful login, you will encounter four distinct categories: Sharing Your Experience, Connecting with Friends, Managing Your Friends List and Messages, and Protecting Your Information.

Sharing Your Gaming Activity

The “Sharing Your Experience” section governs the visibility of your activities related to your PlayStation 4. Two key elements are controlled here: Activities and Trophies.

Your Activities detail your actions on the PlayStation 4, including the games you are playing, videos you are watching, and trophies you are unlocking. By default, individuals who are friends of your friends – those connected to you and your connections – can view this information. However, you have the option to limit visibility to only your direct friends, to no one, or even to allow public viewing.

Trophies, analogous to achievements on Xbox and Steam, are earned through game progression and completion. The default setting allows anyone to view your earned trophies. You can adjust this to restrict visibility to friends of friends, friends only, or completely disable viewing. Furthermore, you can exclude trophies from specific games if you prefer to keep your progress private.

Controlling Friend Connections

The “Connecting With Friends” screen manages who can send you friend requests, the visibility of your real name, the ability to find your account using your real name, and who PlayStation suggests you connect with.

Anyone can, by default, send you a friend request. Your real name and profile picture are visible only to close friends of close friends – those who have accepted a friend request and been granted permission to view this information. Searching for your account using your real name is disabled by default. PlayStation 4 recommendations for connections are limited to close friends of close friends.

These settings prioritize privacy, but can be adjusted. You can enable searching by real name to increase discoverability, or share your real name with a wider audience. Conversely, you can tighten these settings to prevent friend requests and ensure your real name remains private.

If your PlayStation 4 is linked to your Facebook account, you can also control whether your PlayStation Network account is suggested to your Facebook friends via the "Players You May Know" feature.

Friends List and Message Management

The “Managing Your Friends List and Messages” section controls who can view your friends list, see your real name and profile picture in games, send you friend requests, request to watch your gameplay, and send you messages.

By default, friends of friends can view your friends list, and only close friends can see your real name within games. Anyone can send friend requests or messages, while only friends can request to view your gameplay.

You can modify these settings to restrict your friends from viewing your friends list, making it entirely private. Incoming messages can be limited to only those from your friends.

The “Friend Requests” option mirrors the setting found on the “Connecting With Friends” screen, providing convenient access in both locations.

Information Protection Settings

The “Protecting Your Information” screen consolidates controls for managing the visibility of your real name and recommendations for connections.

This screen simply replicates the options available in the preceding sections, offering a centralized location for managing your personal information-related privacy settings.
