Vibrations offer a discreet method for receiving notifications from calls or texts, preventing disturbance to those nearby. However, identifying the sender without checking your iPhone can be challenging.

Designing Your Own Vibration Signals

iOS allows users to create custom vibration patterns, moving beyond the limited selection of pre-packaged alerts. This feature enables you to design unique signals for specific contacts or events.

For instance, you could translate a private signal with friends into a vibration pattern. Alternatively, you might choose to represent a playful phrase, like "Shave and a Haircut," through vibration.

The process of creating a custom vibration is straightforward. Let's explore the steps involved.

This guide will demonstrate creating a new vibration pattern for your default ringtone. This process can be applied to any system sound event, or assigned directly to a contact, as described in our previous article.

Begin by opening the Settings app and selecting "Ringtone".

Next, tap on "Vibration" to access the vibration settings.

Within the "Custom" section, select "Create New Vibration".

Tap and hold the grey area on your iPhone’s screen to define your desired vibration sequence. Use "Stop" to end recording, and "Play" to preview your creation.

If satisfied with the result, tap "Save" and provide a descriptive name for your new vibration.

The newly created vibration will now appear in the "Custom" section of the Vibration screen.

Managing Your Custom Vibrations

You can generate an unlimited number of vibrations, each with a unique name, and assign them to different system events or contacts.

To remove a vibration pattern, tap "Edit" in the top-right corner.

Then, tap the minus sign next to the vibration pattern(s) you wish to delete.

Once deleted, you can assign the remaining vibration patterns to contacts as needed.

Keep in mind that the complexity of patterns is limited. Those with advanced rhythmic skills may find the options somewhat restrictive.
