Preventing Password Frustration: Creating a Reset Disk

Misplacing or forgetting your password can be a significant inconvenience. While methods exist to reset your password using tools like the Ultimate Boot CD and the System Rescue CD, a more proactive approach is to generate a password reset disk.

This disk contains a small file that allows password recovery, even after changes have been made to your original password. It’s a valuable safeguard against potentially embarrassing lockouts. However, secure storage of this disk is paramount, as unauthorized access could compromise your account security.

Creating the Password Reset Disk

To begin, access User Accounts by selecting your User icon from the Start menu. Then, choose the "Create a password reset disk" link located in the upper left-hand corner of the window.

A wizard will guide you through the process, providing essential information about its functionality. Simply proceed to the next step to continue.

Next, you will be prompted to select the removable drive where the password key will be created.

The system will then request your current password, assuming you haven’t forgotten it. This is a necessary step for verification.

Once completed, the process is finished. Remember to store the disk in a secure and easily accessible location for future use.

Upon inspection of the drive, you’ll find a file named userkey.psw, which holds your reset key. You can create a backup copy of this file to an alternative location if desired.

Resetting Your Password with the Disk

Should you find yourself locked out of your account, having a password reset disk simplifies the recovery process. After entering an incorrect password, a "Reset password" link will appear below the login box.

Ensure the USB flash drive containing the reset disk is inserted before attempting to reset your password. Otherwise, an error message will be displayed.

With the disk inserted, the wizard screen will appear, initiating the password reset procedure.

If multiple removable drives are connected, you will be asked to select the correct disk.

Finally, you will be prompted to enter a new password and a helpful password hint.

The password reset is now complete.

It’s important to note that you do not need to generate a new password reset disk after successfully using it to change your password.
