Create a Nameless Folder on iPhone/iPad - Hidden Folder Trick

Creating Nameless Folders on Your iPhone or iPad

When you arrange your Home screens on an iPhone or iPad, newly created folders are automatically assigned a default name by the operating system. iOS prevents users from simply deleting this name and leaving the folder blank, however, a workaround exists to bypass this limitation.

Upon folder creation, iOS typically names the folder based on the category of applications it contains. Occasionally, a user may prefer to create a folder without any identifying label. For instance, infrequently used applications can be consolidated into a folder on a secondary Home screen, purely for organizational purposes.

To accomplish this, an application belonging to the “Food & Drink” category within the App Store is required. If you already possess such an app on your device, you can proceed without further action. The “OpenTable” application will serve as an illustrative example in this process.

Initiating Folder Creation

Begin by creating a folder utilizing the “OpenTable” app. This is achieved by tapping and holding the “OpenTable” icon…

…until a circular “x” button appears in the upper-left corner of the app’s icon. Continue to lightly hold your finger on the icon while simultaneously dragging the “Food & Drink” app icon over another application icon. In this example, the “OpenTable” icon is being dragged over the “Game Center” icon.

It’s crucial to drag the application icon originating from the “Food & Drink” category onto another app icon, and not vice versa. Reversing this action will result in the folder being named according to the category of the second application.

Note: Users of iPhone 6S or 6S Plus models should avoid applying excessive pressure to the app icon during this process. Applying too much force may inadvertently activate the 3D Touch feature, which is not desired. A light tap and hold is sufficient.

Finalizing the Process

A folder will then be generated without a name assigned. Tap anywhere on the Home screen, outside of the newly created folder, to close it. You can now populate the folder by dragging additional app icons into it.

The “Food & Drink” application used to initiate the process can be removed from the folder if desired, or even uninstalled entirely. However, retaining the app may prove beneficial if you intend to create further folders lacking names.

This technique is compatible with devices running iOS 6 and all subsequent versions.

Summary

  • This method allows for the creation of folders without default names.
  • A “Food & Drink” category app is necessary to initiate the process.
  • The technique works on iOS 6 and later.
  • Dragging the correct app icon is essential for success.
