Control Windows with Xbox or Steam Controller - Guide

Utilizing Game Controllers Beyond Gaming on Your PC

For those who utilize a PC as both a gaming platform and a media hub within the living room, relying solely on a mouse for all interactions can be cumbersome.

Leveraging a game controller offers a more convenient alternative for various tasks.

Xbox Controller Functionality

While Xbox controllers generally exhibit seamless compatibility with numerous PC games out of the box, their default functionality doesn't extend to desktop navigation or media playback applications like Netflix.

However, this limitation can be overcome through the implementation of specialized third-party software.

This software enables the use of either an Xbox 360 or an Xbox One controller as a substitute for both a mouse and a keyboard.

Steam Controller Integration

Valve’s Steam controller provides a distinct advantage in this regard.

It is capable of functioning as a mouse and keyboard on your desktop environment without necessitating any additional configuration or adjustments.

Benefits of Controller Use

  • Enhanced comfort during media consumption.
  • Simplified navigation of the desktop interface.
  • Reduced reliance on multiple input devices.

Ultimately, employing a game controller for broader PC usage can significantly improve the user experience, particularly in a living room setup.

By default, Microsoft does not enable functionality for Xbox controllers to emulate mouse and keyboard input. Therefore, utilizing an Xbox controller for desktop navigation necessitates the installation of specialized software. Fortunately, several viable options are available to achieve this.

Gopher360 presents a straightforward solution, being both free and open-source, and operating without the need for complex settings. Alternative applications, however, typically demand some degree of configuration.

Simply download and execute the Gopher360 application. This lightweight program functions immediately upon launch. Mouse cursor movement is controlled via the left analog stick, while the "A" button serves as the left mouse click and the "X" button as the right mouse click. Detailed key configurations are readily available on the Gopher360 website.

To integrate the Windows on-screen keyboard, running Gopher360 with administrator privileges is required. This can be achieved by right-clicking the application and selecting "Run as Administrator." Persistent administrator access can be granted through the file's "Properties" dialog, under the "Compatibility" tab, by enabling the "Run this program as an administrator" option.

The on-screen keyboard in Windows 10 can be activated by right-clicking the taskbar and choosing "Show touch keyboard button." A keyboard icon will then appear in the system tray. Selecting this icon with the controller will display the on-screen keyboard, useful for quick text input, such as searching within streaming services.

Gopher360’s functionality is dependent on it remaining active in the background. To ensure continuous operation, the Gopher.exe file can be placed within the computer’s Startup folder. This will automatically launch the program upon user login.

While Gopher360 is our recommended solution, alternative options exist. JoyToKey and Xpadder are both sophisticated game controller configuration tools capable of emulating mouse and keyboard input. However, these programs necessitate the creation of configurations and profiles, making them less immediately accessible. Note that JoyToKey operates as shareware, and is therefore not entirely free.

For those willing to invest a small amount, Controller Companion, available on Steam for $2.99, is a highly-rated option. Specifically designed for Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers, it enables desktop mouse control. Notably, it also features a custom on-screen keyboard that some users may find more efficient than the standard Windows keyboard.

Utilizing Steam Controllers for Desktop Navigation

Valve’s Steam Controllers offer seamless functionality as both a mouse and keyboard alternative when connected to a PC. Direct operation on the Windows desktop is achievable without additional software installation.

Cursor movement is managed via the right touchpad; a simple flick of the finger initiates continuous motion. The right shoulder button registers a left-click, while the left shoulder button executes a right-click – a configuration that prioritizes ergonomic access.

Additional buttons provide convenient actions. The left touchpad serves as a scroll wheel, and the joystick emulates the functionality of arrow keys for directional input.

These controls are fully customizable. Access Steam’s Big Picture mode, then navigate to the "Settings" cog in the top-right corner. Select "Configurations" under the Controller section, and then choose "Desktop configuration" to personalize your settings, mirroring the process used for game profiles.

While Steam’s integrated on-screen keyboard isn’t directly accessible due to its overlay nature, the standard Windows on-screen keyboard functions identically when used with a Steam Controller.

Although a dedicated keyboard and mouse remain optimal for intensive PC tasks, a controller’s ability to emulate these inputs proves valuable for basic functions. This includes video playback and web browsing from a distance, such as within a living room environment.

It is regrettable that native support for Xbox controllers on the Windows desktop isn’t a standard Windows feature. However, with appropriate software, setup is straightforward and efficient.
