Change Account Name on Windows 8.x Start Screen - How To

Changing Your Account Name in Windows 8

Historically, Windows has consistently shown a user's name in a visible location, typically within the Start menu. Windows 8 continues this practice, displaying your name in the upper right corner of the Start screen.

Modifying how your name is presented in this area isn't immediately intuitive. This guide details the necessary steps to personalize your account name within the Windows 8 environment.

Microsoft Accounts and Username Display

A key difference in Windows 8, compared to earlier iterations, is the increased reliance on Microsoft accounts for user login, rather than solely local accounts. The username visible on the Start screen is directly linked to the online account you've associated with your Windows installation.

While it's possible to alter the name through the Live.com website and your profile settings, navigating the site can be cumbersome. A quicker method exists directly from the Start screen.

To access this faster route, press the Windows key to open the Start screen. If you've enabled Apps view in Windows 8.1, click the up arrow to reveal all applications.

Accessing Account Settings

Right-click on your user picture, located in the upper right corner of the screen, and select Change account picture from the context menu.

This action will open the Accounts screen. Click the More account settings online link, positioned on the right side of the screen.

You will then be directed to a website. Enter your email address and password to log in to your Microsoft account.

Editing Your Display Name

Within the account summary section of the website, locate and click the Edit display name link.

Enter your desired name, which can be customized to your preference – you aren't limited to just your given name and surname. Then, click Save to apply the changes.

Finalizing the Change

A system restart is required for the new name to take effect. Upon restarting Windows and accessing the Start screen, your updated name will be displayed.

The process is generally straightforward. However, in some instances, the change may not register immediately. While switching to a local account and back again is a potential workaround, it is not generally recommended.
