The iPad Side Switch: Mute or Rotation Lock?

iPhones and iPads are equipped with a convenient physical switch on the side. This switch allows users to quickly mute the device, preventing disruptions during work, rest, or in public settings like movie theaters.

Many users appreciate this feature, and it’s a design choice that is regrettably uncommon among other device manufacturers. Having to unlock a phone and adjust the volume via software can be cumbersome. A simple toggle switch offers a more direct solution for silencing a device.

iPad Specific Functionality

However, on iPads, this side switch can be customized. Users have the option to configure it to lock the screen orientation instead.

This is particularly useful when reading on an iPad in bed. By locking the orientation, the screen won’t automatically rotate into landscape mode when the device is held sideways.

It’s important to note that this functionality is exclusive to the iPad. Screen rotation lock on iPhones is typically managed through the Control Center, using the button located furthest to the right.

Changing the Side Switch Function

To modify the side switch’s function on your iPad, begin by opening the Settings application. Then, select the General category from the settings menu.

Within the General settings, you will find an option labeled "Use Side Switch To." This allows you to choose whether the switch will mute the device or lock the screen’s rotation.

When the side switch is set to mute, a visual indicator will appear on the screen each time you toggle it on or off.

Conversely, the rotation lock setting does not provide an immediate visual confirmation of its status. It simply indicates that the switch is configured for screen rotation lock.

Verifying Rotation Lock

To determine if the screen orientation is locked, rotate your iPad. If the screen does not follow your rotation, it is locked.

Alternatively, you can access the Control Center by swiping up from the bottom edge of the screen. Check the status of the rotation lock button within the Control Center.

With these steps, you can easily customize the purpose of your iPad’s side switch. You can switch between using it as a mute button or a rotation lock, and revert the settings if needed.
