Apple TV Remote Touch Sensitivity: How to Adjust

Adjusting Touch Sensitivity on the New Apple TV Remote
If you recently acquired the newest Apple TV model featuring the touch-sensitive remote, you may have encountered difficulties with the text input process. Potential frustrations can often be mitigated by modifying the remote’s sensitivity settings.
Previous iterations of the Apple TV remote were not without their drawbacks. Despite robust construction, the earlier remote proved cumbersome and inconvenient, particularly for individuals with larger hands.
Apple has refined the remote design significantly. The updated version boasts a larger size and incorporates a touchpad on its surface. This allows users to navigate menus, control playback, and input text simply by swiping their thumb.
The Text Entry Challenge
However, the text entry method remains a point of contention for many users. Despite improvements, Apple has yet to fully optimize this functionality. Entering text on the prior Apple TV was already somewhat irritating, but targeting selections was generally easier.
Furthermore, the option to connect a standard Bluetooth keyboard, available with older models, has been removed in the latest version. This limitation is a source of disappointment for some.
With the new remote, overshooting intended characters during swiping is common, or repeated swipes may be necessary for accurate input. Notably, the ability to utilize an iPhone or iPad as a remote control, a previously available feature, has also been discontinued.
Fortunately, the remote’s sensitivity can be adjusted, potentially easing some of these issues. While it won't eliminate the inherent frustrations of text input, it may offer a slight improvement.
How to Adjust the Sensitivity
Begin by accessing the Settings tile on your Apple TV’s home screen.
Within the settings menu, select “Remotes and Devices”.
On the “Remotes and Devices” screen, choose “Touch Surface Tracking” to modify the trackpad sensitivity.
You are presented with three options: slow, medium, and fast. If the trackpad feels unresponsive, select a faster setting. Conversely, if the movement is too rapid, opt for a slower setting.
Experiment with the different settings to determine what best suits your preferences. Keep in mind that this adjustment may not entirely resolve the difficulties encountered when entering complex information like email addresses and passwords.
Alternative Remote Options
If you are dissatisfied with the new Apple remote, you can still utilize the older, slimmer remote. While not ideal, it represents a more affordable alternative.
Choosing the older remote means sacrificing the swipe interface and Siri access. However, if you misplace the new remote or simply prefer the older design, compatibility with previous generation Apple TV models allows for continued use.
