The Evolution and Benefits of Fingerprint Scanners
For a considerable period, fingerprint scanners were occasionally offered on laptop models, yet they often felt like an underdeveloped and easily overlooked feature. However, this perception shifted dramatically with Apple's intervention, who refined the technology and elevated it to a highly desirable component.
Apple first unveiled Touch ID alongside the iPhone 5S in 2013. It rapidly established itself as a crucial functionality. Its seamless integration into the Home button created a remarkably intuitive experience for unlocking devices, downloading applications, and authorizing purchases with a simple finger touch.
The initial setup of a new iOS device – encompassing models like the iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air 2, and iPad Mini 3 – prompts users to register a fingerprint.
Setting Up and Utilizing Touch ID
Alongside the fingerprint, a four-digit PIN is also required. This PIN, along with Touch ID, can be used to unlock the device. It also serves as an alternative to your Apple ID within the App Store, and facilitates transactions using Apple Pay.
The system functions with impressive accuracy, but experience has shown that relying on a single fingerprint can be limiting.
The Need for Multiple Fingerprints
Situations may arise where your registered finger is unavailable. For example, while writing, you might need to quickly unlock your iPhone or iPad without pausing to put down your writing instrument.
Alternatively, if an iPad is shared, another user may wish to utilize Touch ID as well. Numerous valid scenarios demonstrate the benefit of having multiple fingerprint options.
Adding Additional Fingerprints
Fortunately, Apple foresaw this need. The iOS operating system permits the addition of an unlimited number of fingerprints to your device.
This flexibility ensures convenient and secure access, adapting to various user needs and circumstances.
Enhance Your Device Security with Fingerprint Recognition
Access your device’s settings, then select “Touch ID & Passcode.” You will be prompted to enter your device’s passcode for verification.
Currently, only one fingerprint may be registered. This fingerprint will be displayed under the “Fingerprints” section. Additional fingerprints can be added by tapping the “Add a Fingerprint” option, as shown in the image.
The system requires training to accurately recognize the new fingerprint. Firmly press your finger onto the Home button, avoiding a forceful click. Maintain a still finger position until prompted to lift. The device will initially scan the central portion of your finger.
Subsequently, it will scan the edges and surrounding areas to create a complete profile.
Upon completion, a confirmation message will be displayed. Touch ID doesn’t differentiate between users when adding fingerprints.
Each fingerprint is simply labeled as “Finger #”. The first fingerprint enrolled corresponds to the one used during the initial device setup. However, as more fingerprints are added, keeping track of them can become challenging.
Within the Touch ID settings, placing a finger on the sensor will highlight the corresponding fingerprint in gray. You can also tap on individual fingerprints to rename them for easier identification.
Furthermore, the “Delete Fingerprint” option allows for the removal of any registered fingerprint, which is useful if access needs to be revoked.
It’s crucial to remember that your passcode remains essential for certain device functions. For instance, a passcode is required each time the device is restarted before it can be unlocked. Sharing fingerprint access can be a more convenient alternative to sharing your passcode.
Touch ID can also be entirely disabled, or selectively disabled for specific features. This provides an extra layer of security for transactions made through Apple Pay or within iTunes and the App Store.
Many users of recent iOS versions appreciate the convenience of Touch ID. There is hope that Apple will extend this technology to their laptop computers in the future.
While some may view it as a marketing tactic, the benefits of Touch ID become apparent with regular use. Eliminating the need to repeatedly enter passwords for app downloads quickly makes it an invaluable feature. The ability to manage fingerprints – adding, renaming, and deleting – further enhances its practicality.
