Add & Organize Music on Windows 10 with Groove Music

A New Era of Music Playback on Windows 10: Introducing Groove Music
Traditionally, Windows Media Player (WMP) served as the primary music application on Windows operating systems. However, WMP has remained largely unchanged since its iteration in Windows 7. While still functional, it lacks the modern features found in contemporary music players.
Windows 10 introduces Groove Music, a new application designed for managing and enjoying your digital music library. Its interface will likely feel familiar to anyone who has previously utilized a music-focused application.
Exploring the Groove Music Interface
Groove Music allows users to navigate their music collection organized by album, artist, or song. A dedicated search function is also available, enabling quick location of specific tracks within your library.
During playback, essential controls are displayed along the bottom of the screen. These include the album artwork, song title, artist name, and standard playback functionalities.
Keyboard media controls are also fully supported. Activating these controls will summon a compact control panel in the upper-left corner of your screen, providing options for navigation, pausing, and volume adjustment.
Navigating App Features and Settings
The application’s features are accessible by clicking the three-line menu icon located in the top-left corner. A subsequent click on the same icon will conceal these features.
Access to the application’s settings is granted by clicking the gear icon positioned next to your user name. These settings will be explored in greater detail in a subsequent section.
Groove Music also integrates with the Windows Store, allowing you to directly purchase new music. Simply select the "Get music in Store" option to begin browsing and buying tracks.
Purchased music is downloaded directly to your device. Furthermore, you can enable an option within the settings to automatically download purchases made on other connected devices.Configuring Groove's Application Settings
The settings within Groove allow users to personalize their experience. This includes managing downloads, altering the app's visual theme, and performing a reset to default configurations.

A Groove Music Pass subscription provides an ad-free listening experience. It functions similarly to popular streaming services like Apple Music, Pandora, and Spotify, offering compatibility across multiple platforms, including iOS and Android.

Upon initiating a purchase, the system will request password verification. This security measure ensures account protection before completing transactions or accessing account management features. This setting can be adjusted later if desired.

Groove can be configured to automatically download any songs previously purchased on other devices. This feature is disabled by default, offering users control over their storage and bandwidth usage.
The application also possesses the capability to automatically locate and update missing album artwork and song metadata. This function is enabled by default, ensuring a consistently rich and informative music library.

If a song is added to OneDrive, Groove can be set to automatically remove it from the Groove Music Pass library. This setting is initially set to "Off".
For security and account access, users will be prompted to enter their username and password when making purchases or managing their account details. This setting is enabled by default and is recommended to remain active.

The "Reset" function clears all user-created playlists and any music added from the Groove Music catalog. Additionally, the app's background can be switched to a "Dark" theme, changing the interface from a light to a black color scheme.

Beyond its store and interface, Groove supports the addition and playback of locally owned music files. This allows users to consolidate their entire music collection within a single application.
Integrating Your Existing Music Library
If you are evaluating Groove Music as a successor to Windows Media Player, it’s likely you already possess a substantial digital music library. Building your library within Groove can be accomplished by utilizing watch folders to monitor specific locations on your computer.
To initiate this process, navigate to the "Music on this PC" section and select the option labeled "Choose where we look for music".

At least one watch folder is required, though the application allows for the addition of multiple folders as needed. Groove will then scan the designated folder(s) and incorporate your music into its library.

Importing playlists created in Apple iTunes is also a supported feature.

For dedicated music enthusiasts, Groove Music may prove somewhat limited in its capabilities. It currently lacks support for alternative audio formats like .flac and .ogg. However, for users with more basic requirements, it functions as a viable alternative to Windows Media Player.
It’s important to note that Windows Media Player remains accessible through the Start menu, offering continued functionality. Nevertheless, those with extensive music collections often prefer specialized software for managing and playing their music.
