Subpoenas Issued to Tech Companies by January 6th Committee

The House committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol has issued subpoenas to four prominent technology firms on Thursday.

Demands for Information

Bennie G. Thompson, Chairman of the January 6th Select Committee (D-MS), dispatched letters to Alphabet – the parent company of YouTube – Meta (which owns Facebook and Instagram), Reddit, and Twitter.

These letters request further details regarding the utilization of these platforms in orchestrating the violent occurrences of that day.

Allegations Against the Platforms

The committee asserts that each company hosted content connected to the planning of the assault on the Capitol. Specifically, Meta’s platforms were allegedly utilized for sharing hateful and inciting messages.

Furthermore, the committee claims these platforms facilitated the dissemination of misinformation, disinformation, and election-related conspiracy theories.

The committee believes that Facebook’s former Civic Integrity team possessed information pertinent to the ongoing investigation.

Facebook's Role in the "Stop the Steal" Movement

As previously reported, Facebook served as a central hub for the "Stop the Steal" movement.

The platform was criticized for its inability to effectively control the spread of content challenging the validity of the 2020 U.S. presidential election results.

Facebook was also reportedly a preferred organizing tool for extremist groups, such as the Proud Boys and the Three Percenters, who participated in the Capitol attack.

Focus on Reddit and Other Platforms

The committee’s concerns regarding Reddit center on the subreddit r/The_Donald, which relocated to its own domain after being banned for hate speech in January 2020.

It was also noted that YouTube was used to broadcast live streams of the events, and Twitter users allegedly used the platform to communicate regarding the planning and execution of the attack.

Previous Requests and New Deadline

The committee initially requested records from 15 platforms in August of the previous year.

This initial request included extremist-friendly sites like 4chan, 8kun, Gab, Parler, and theDonald.win, alongside mainstream platforms like Snapchat, Twitch, and TikTok.

The committee is now reissuing its demands to the four major social media platforms due to what it considers insufficient detail provided in response to prior requests.

A new deadline of January 27 has been established for the submission of the requested information.
