Honda Cuts Funding to Cruise Robotaxi Venture in Japan

Honda Halts Robotaxi Venture with GM and Cruise

Honda Motor Co. has decided to discontinue financial support for its collaborative project with General Motors and Cruise, which aimed to introduce a robotaxi service in Japan.

This decision follows GM’s recent announcement to end funding for Cruise and refocus its autonomous vehicle strategy.

GM's Shift in Autonomous Vehicle Strategy

General Motors revealed on Tuesday its intention to integrate Cruise into its operations and concentrate on the development of personal autonomous vehicles.

Although GM maintains a 90% ownership in Cruise, Honda possesses a minority share, alongside investors such as T. Rowe Price and Microsoft.

GM intends to repurchase shares from these minority shareholders, thereby increasing its ownership stake to exceed 97%.

Original Plans and Subsequent Challenges

In October 2023, Honda, Cruise, and GM jointly announced plans to launch a robotaxi service in Tokyo, initially scheduled for 2026.

The service was to utilize Cruise’s specifically designed robotaxis, known as The Origin.

However, shortly after this announcement, Cruise experienced setbacks, including the revocation of its operating permits in California.

This led to the grounding of its U.S. fleet due to concerns regarding the handling of a safety incident and communication with regulators.

Honda's Revised Expectations

In January 2024, Honda’s CEO indicated an expectation for the company to introduce autonomous vehicles (AVs) towards the latter part of the decade.

Subsequently, in July 2024, Cruise made the decision to abandon its plans for the production of The Origin robotaxi.

These developments have ultimately prompted Honda to reassess and withdraw its funding from the joint robotaxi venture.
