HBO Max Price Increase: What to Expect

HBO Max Price Increase and Password Sharing Restrictions Announced

David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, has indicated that HBO Max subscription costs are set to increase. Simultaneously, measures will be implemented to limit the practice of password sharing, as initially reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Zaslav discussed these forthcoming changes during his presentation at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference.

Rationale for Price Adjustment

He emphasized that the high quality of content offered – spanning motion pictures, television production, and the streaming platform itself – justifies a price adjustment. “We think we’re way underpriced,” Zaslav stated, suggesting current rates do not reflect the value provided.

Addressing Password Sharing

The company is preparing to actively address the issue of unauthorized password sharing. While not currently a primary focus, Zaslav confirmed that action will be taken in the near future.

“People are really starting to love HBO Max,” he explained. “That’s the key.” The strategy centers on fostering a strong connection between subscribers and the platform’s content before enforcing stricter sharing policies.

Current Subscription Costs

As of now, HBO Max offers several subscription tiers:

  • Basic with Ads: $9.99 per month
  • Standard: $16.99 per month
  • Premium: $20.99 per month

These prices are expected to be revised as the company moves forward with its pricing strategy.

The impending changes reflect a broader industry trend towards monetizing streaming services more effectively and protecting revenue streams.
