HBO Max Now Available on Amazon Fire TV

The HBO Max streaming platform, brought to you by WarnerMedia, is now accessible on Amazon’s Fire TV devices, approximately six months after its initial release. This service presents both the complete HBO library alongside a broader range of content from WarnerMedia’s collection, as well as a selection of original programming.

As part of this new agreement, current HBO subscribers who utilize Amazon services will be able to access the HBO Max app without incurring any extra charges, a benefit also extended to all existing HBO Max users.

The reason for the initial absence of the HBO Max app on Amazon Fire TV wasn’t related to technical difficulties, but stemmed from unsuccessful discussions between the two companies. Amazon proposed offering HBO Max access through its established Prime Video Channels, granting expanded catalog access to current HBO subscribers. This was made complex by HBO Max’s launch as an evolution of the HBO Now app, leading Amazon to believe a similar upgrade path could be offered to other HBO subscribers.

WarnerMedia, however, preferred to launch HBO Max as a distinct streaming service, rather than as an additional premium channel. In May, the company stated it anticipated reaching agreements with remaining distribution partners, including Amazon, mirroring the access provided to Netflix, Disney+, and Hulu on Fire devices.

That agreement has now been finalized. The companies jointly announced this morning that HBO Max would begin deployment to Amazon Fire TV streaming devices, Fire TV Edition smart televisions, and Fire tablets starting Tuesday, November 17. This expansion will potentially reach “tens of millions” of Amazon device users, according to WarnerMedia.

TechCrunch reports that, as a consequence of this deal, HBO content will remain available on Prime Video Channels through a separate subscription. Furthermore, customers currently subscribed to HBO via Prime Video Channels will now also have access to HBO Max at no additional cost.

Customers can access HBO Max by logging into the app using their existing Amazon account details, as confirmed by a company spokesperson. This process mirrors how HBO subscribers access the HBO Max app using credentials from other vMVPD (Virtual Multichannel Video Programming Distributor — a streaming service offering live and on-demand content) services, such as YouTube TV or Hulu.

“We are thrilled that Amazon customers can now experience the high-quality content available within HBO Max,” stated Tony Goncalves, head of Sales and Distribution for WarnerMedia, in a release regarding the agreement. “Our ongoing objective is to ensure HBO Max and its exceptional content are accessible to customers on all their preferred devices. Fire TV is a popular choice among customers, and we are eager to collaborate with the Amazon team to engage and expand our subscriber base by showcasing everything HBO Max has to offer.”

The integration with Fire TV will also enable Amazon customers to launch and navigate HBO Max using voice commands via Alexa, such as “Alexa, open HBO Max,” or “Alexa, find Game of Thrones,” among others.

“We have enjoyed a long-standing partnership with HBO, bringing their excellent content to Fire TV and enhancing discovery and enjoyment through features like search integration, Alexa, and personalized recommendations,” said Marc Whitten, vice president of Amazon Entertainment Devices and Services, in a statement. “We are excited to continue this collaboration with the launch of HBO Max, delivering even more outstanding content to our Fire TV customers.”

Last month, WarnerMedia announced that HBO Max had reached a total of 28.7 million subscribers, however, a limited number of these were “over the top” – meaning they subscribed directly to the HBO Max app, as will now be possible on Amazon Fire TV. The majority of subscribers came through “wholesale” agreements, such as those with traditional pay TV providers. Only 3.6 million were classified as direct retail subscribers.

These figures are likely to increase now that HBO Max is addressing one of the two major streaming device markets for distribution. However, Roku has not yet announced a comparable agreement.
