Harry Stebbings Launches $140M Fund - 20VC

Harry Stebbings Secures $140 Million for 20VC Funds

Harry Stebbings, the creator of the popular podcast “20 minute VC,” has announced the successful fundraising of two venture capital funds under the 20VC banner. These funds, established following the podcast’s considerable success, will focus on different investment stages.

The combined assets under management for both funds reach $140 million, sourced from limited partners (LPs) such as MIT, Shakil Khan – an early investor in Spotify – and RIT Capital Partners.

Significant Growth in AUM

This total represents a substantial 15-fold increase compared to Stebbings’ initial fund, which launched less than a year ago with $8.3 million in assets.

Fund Investment Strategies

The 20VC Early fund will concentrate on early-stage investments, providing checks ranging from $250,000 to $750,000. Meanwhile, the 20VC Explorer fund will target growth-stage companies in Series B rounds and beyond, with investment sizes between $1 million and $5 million.

Portfolio and Industry Implications

The 20VC portfolio already boasts investments in several companies that have achieved unicorn status, including the audio application Clubhouse and the virtual event platform Hopin. However, perhaps the most significant aspect is the broader impact of Stebbings’ success on the evolving landscape of the technology sector.

The Rising Value of Media Expertise in Venture Capital

Increasingly, experience in media and the capacity to deliver valuable content in a crowded digital space are being recognized as valuable assets within the venture capital industry. This trend is exemplified by Andreessen Horowitz’s recent launch of Future, a dedicated media outlet covering startup and technology trends.

Stebbings’ podcast, with over 200,000 subscribers and 80 million downloads, has built a strong audience through interviews with prominent figures in the tech world, such as Biz Stone (Twitter co-founder), Stewart Butterfield (Slack founder), and Angela Strange (a16z). The monetization of these connections demonstrates the growing belief that a strong online presence can facilitate fundraising efforts.

Addressing Concerns About Emerging Fund Managers

Stebbings’ ability to raise a substantial amount of capital may alleviate some concerns regarding the challenges faced by emerging fund managers in scaling their initial micro-funds. Specifically, it addresses the question of how to attract commitments from large institutional investors.

Obtaining funding from institutions with significant capital allocation for venture investments can be difficult, particularly for diverse and underrepresented founders. While Stebbings’ case may be unique, it highlights the importance of a strong network and established relationships as key competitive advantages in the investment world.

Convergence of Media and Venture Capital

Ultimately, the lines between media and venture capital are becoming increasingly blurred. Stebbings occupies a unique position at the intersection of these two domains, and with an additional $140 million in funding, it will be compelling to observe his future endeavors and the resulting investment returns.
