hands-on with mophie’s new modular smartphone battery case

Initial reactions to the announcement of the Juice Pack Connect last week included a degree of uncertainty. I, too, initially found myself questioning its features. The timing, coinciding closely with the launch of Apple’s iPhone 12, led many to reasonably believe that this updated version of Mophie’s case would utilize the new MagSafe technology.
However, while future iterations of this accessory may incorporate that functionality, the current model relies on two core technologies: wireless power transfer and a traditional adhesive system. This design choice allows the battery pack to function effectively with any smartphone capable of Qi wireless charging.
The system’s design is notably minimalist. A protective case is not included within the packaging; users must provide their own. The package contains the battery pack itself, a grip/stand component, and, conveniently, two adapters. The inclusion of extra adapters is a thoughtful addition, allowing for replacements or sharing the battery with others.
The installation process is straightforward, aided by a small cardboard guide to ensure proper centering, similar to the frames used for screen protector application. Direct attachment to the phone’s back is also possible, though I personally prefer to avoid permanent accessory installations. It’s worth noting that using the adapter will result in a small protrusion on the back of your device when other accessories are not connected. The included accessories attach to the anchor point from the side. The battery pack is the most aesthetically pleasing element of the system, closely resembling the design of previous Juice Pack models. The ring/stand feels less refined and appears to be a secondary consideration for use when wireless charging isn’t needed. A key consideration is that the more compact battery design results in a reduced capacity; 5,000mAh is adequate, but larger capacity cases are available at a lower price point.
Another factor to consider is that wireless charging is inherently slower than wired charging. Consequently, this system is better suited for extending device usage over longer periods rather than providing rapid charging. However, if a quick charge is needed and the appropriate cables are available, the USB-C port (also used for recharging the battery pack) can be utilized for faster charging. The Connect Stand functions adequately, performing better as a stand than as a secure grip. A more robust grip, such as a Pop Socket-style accessory, would be a beneficial addition. The modular nature of the system, however, allows for the potential introduction of additional accessories in the future. At a price of $80, it represents a significant investment, consistent with the typical cost of Mophie products.
