Addressing Engineering Productivity Challenges

For a considerable period, nascent companies have been striving to identify and address operational deficiencies within larger enterprises. Their objective is to streamline processes, reduce repetitive tasks, and provide managers with insights into areas where team efforts are being inefficiently allocated.

Joining this trend is HackerPulse, a company that has developed a platform designed to furnish enterprises with enhanced visibility into the activities of their engineering teams. This increased awareness allows for the identification of productivity bottlenecks and the resolution of operational inefficiencies.

Platform Capabilities and Integration

Based in San Francisco, the company provides a dashboard that seamlessly integrates with commonly used developer tools. These include platforms such as GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket, alongside tools that track revenue and user analytics.

HackerPulse consolidates this data to provide team leaders with a clear understanding of how and where their engineering teams are dedicating their time. The tool also assists in the formation of specialized engineering groups for particular projects, according to the startup.

Focus on Team Optimization, Not Individual Tracking

Gleb Braverman, co-founder and CEO of HackerPulse (pictured above), emphasizes that the platform is not intended for monitoring individual coding output – it lacks this functionality. He clarifies that the tool’s purpose isn’t to justify workforce reductions.

Instead, the primary goal is to empower managers to discover strategies for enhancing the overall performance of their engineering teams.

“Gaining a comprehensive understanding of an engineering team’s activities and time allocation can be remarkably challenging,” Braverman explained. “Identifying bottlenecks, excessive time spent in meetings, or disruptions to productive work often requires significant effort, despite the availability of the underlying data.”

From Engineer-Focused Tool to B2B Solution

Braverman highlights the platform’s appeal to engineers, noting that it originated as a tool for developers to monitor their own progress. However, due to substantial enterprise interest, it evolved into a business-to-business (B2B) solution.

This marks Braverman’s second venture, inspired by a podcast featuring Bill Gurley, a general partner at Benchmark Capital. Gurley expressed surprise that no one was attempting to disrupt LinkedIn with a ranking system for all employees.

Braverman began exploring this concept and collaborated with Alberto Scherb, an early investor in his previous company, Speakezee – described as “Snapchat for voice.” He then commenced development, launching the product in July 2024.

Early Traction and Market Validation

The initial product quickly attracted 20,000 users. Following feedback from both customers and investors, Braverman recognized the potential for adapting the technology to a broader application.

“We rapidly determined there was considerable demand for solutions of this nature,” he stated.

Target Industries and Current Customers

Currently, HackerPulse focuses on companies with large engineering teams, prioritizing the telecom, manufacturing, and logistics sectors – industries where technological adoption has historically been slower. The startup has already secured several enterprise clients, including Preply, Coverflex, and DiscoverCars.

Seed Funding and Future Development

Driven by strong demand, HackerPulse recently completed a $1.5 million seed funding round led by AltaIR Capital, with participation from Antler and DVC Fund. The company also received investment from angel investors associated with Uber, Cloudflare, and Google, bringing expertise in areas like market entry, and pricing models.

It’s worth noting that addressing this challenge isn’t novel; Jellyfish, for example, has secured over $110 million in funding for a similar purpose. Some organizations also develop their own internal tools.

Competitive Differentiation

However, Braverman believes HackerPulse’s emphasis on engineer-centric insights and visibility sets it apart. “Our differentiation lies in our focus on team dynamics and optimizing workflows, rather than simply providing reports based on existing data,” he explained.

Roadmap and Growth Strategy

Following the funding round, the company’s primary objectives are to accelerate sales and enhance product functionality.

“Our aim is to achieve several million dollars in Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) before pursuing a Series A funding round,” Braverman said. “Currently, we are concentrating on expanding our customer base, gathering user feedback, and refining the product to ensure we are well-positioned for further growth.”
