The Atlas for Cities, a market intelligence platform supported by 500 Startups that links technology firms with state and municipal governments, has been purchased by Government Executive Media Group, a publishing and market intelligence firm backed by Growth Catalyst Partners.

The company, headquartered in San Diego, will join a collection of publications and services, including “Route Fifty,” a resource for local government, and DefenseOne, an intelligence service focused on defense matters.

The Atlas facilitates networks where state and local government personnel can exchange successful strategies and serves as a promotional outlet for startups aiming to provide services to these public sector employees. The platform allows government leaders to communicate, locate examples of effective technology deployments, and solicit input from peers.

The site also enables government contractors to connect with key leaders and gain access to data indicating purchasing interests, helping them refine their strategies within the public sector, as well as providing insights into the challenges and potential solutions relevant to state and local areas nationwide.

According to Tim Hartman, CEO of Government Executive Media Group, “The Atlas aligns with GEMG’s commitment to identifying companies that enhance our comprehensive range of services, enabling our partners to connect with decision-makers throughout the public sector.”

Founded in 2019 by Ellory Monks and Elle Hempen, The Atlas for Cities has received funding from individual investors and the 500 Startups accelerator. Currently, the platform supports a network of 21,000 government officials representing 3,400 cities.

“U.S. state and local governments collectively expend $3.7 trillion annually, representing nearly 20% of the nation’s GDP,” stated Elle Hempen, a co-founder of The Atlas. “Our goal of fostering greater openness and accessibility for local leaders has the potential to reshape this substantial and often complex market, driving real improvements in addressing critical issues.”
