Google is currently undergoing significant changes within its Pixel division. The Pixel 6 represents a substantial effort to revitalize the company’s hardware sector, featuring a custom-designed Tensor chip.

However, the Pixel 6’s arrival isn’t immediate. Until its fall release, Google introduces the 5a, the newest iteration in the “budget flagship” line. This line has consistently provided a positive impact on sales for a department facing challenges.

Addressing Cancellation Rumors

Google officially acknowledged the phone’s development in April, primarily to dispel premature rumors suggesting its cancellation. The company confirmed to TechCrunch that the “Pixel 5a 5G is not canceled” and would be released later in the year in both the U.S. and Japan.

The announcement aligned with the launch timeline of the previous year’s a-series phone. The device is now officially available for purchase, starting August 26th, at a price of $449.

The Pixel 5a with 5G can be described as a “safe” offering. This characteristic is particularly noticeable in light of the recent Pixel 6 announcement. It doesn’t represent a radical departure, but rather a continuation of a strategy focused on maintaining a solid position within the competitive smartphone market.

“Safe” isn’t necessarily negative, especially considering the price point. The phone is durable, now boasting IP67 water resistance, and is fully capable of handling everyday tasks.

Key Specifications and Features

As the name indicates, the phone supports 5G connectivity. It features a dual-camera system, utilizing the same 12- and 16-megapixel sensors found in the Pixel 5.

These cameras leverage various software-enhanced modes, including Night Sight, Live HDR+, and Portrait Light. The device is powered by the Snapdragon 765G processor, though the RAM has been reduced to 6GB.

The phone offers 128GB of storage. Notably, the battery capacity has been increased from 4080 mAh to 4680 mAh. The screen size has also been expanded from 6.0 to 6.34 inches, while maintaining the same resolution.

Wireless charging, present in the Pixel 5, has been removed. However, a headphone jack has been included.
