Android 12 Beta 2 Released by Google - What's New?

Android 12 Beta 2 Now Available

The second beta version of Android 12 has been released by Google today. The initial beta, unveiled during Google’s I/O conference in May, provided an initial look at Google’s redesigned “Material You” interface.

However, not all anticipated features and design adjustments were included in that first release. This new beta expands upon the initial offering, delivering more of the promised updates to testers.

Enhanced Privacy Features

A key addition is a new privacy dashboard. This feature provides users with a simplified view of which applications have recently accessed the device’s microphone, camera, and location data.

Furthermore, indicators are now present to clearly show when an app is actively utilizing the microphone or camera. Quick Setting toggles have also been implemented, allowing users to quickly revoke app access to these components.

When access is disabled through these toggles, applications will receive empty audio and video streams. A clipboard read notification has also been introduced, alerting users when an application is accessing the clipboard’s contents.

Improved Connectivity and Developer Focus

Beta 2 also introduces a new Internet Panel. This panel streamlines the process of switching between different internet connections, including Wi-Fi networks and mobile data providers.

Google is now one release cycle away from achieving platform stability, targeted for August. Developers are encouraged to finalize compatibility testing and distribute updated versions of their applications, SDKs, and libraries at this time.

Based on the current release schedule, the final version of Android 12 is anticipated to launch in September.

Beta Program Accessibility

Testing the beta requires a compatible device. The list of supported devices has been expanded to include numerous non-Google devices.

For example, Sharp has recently joined the beta program. A comprehensive list of compatible devices, along with instructions for installation on non-Google hardware, can be found here.

This wider availability allows for broader testing and feedback before the official release.
